well there are going to be 2 films. the story in "The Hobbit" will comprise film 1, and "Film 2" will be a film comprised of all the Tolkein histories that will better connect The Hobbit with the LOTR trilogy. F2 is probably where we will see Aragorn.

and since GDT is directing, you now for a fact that Ron Perlman and Doug Jones will have some sort of role. GDT has always loved Perlmans voice, so i wouldnt be surprised to have him voice Smaug.

I can see Ron Perlman playing one of the dwarves.

Oh and Doug Jones could definitely pull off an elf.

i can see no reason for Saruman, Arwen, Legolas, or Aragorn to be in the movie. other than fanboys wanting to see the story killed in the efforts to have certain characters in the movie.

Tom, if they were in it, they'd probably be in the second one. There's plenty of stories that could be told about all of those characters in the years leading up to Fellowship.

Really interested to see what they do with the second film.

If it's true about a second one that bridges The Hobbit and Fellowship, there is potential for epic fail or epic win. Are they going to consult Chris Tolkien or anything on a storyline? I mean, it obviously won't have a JRR Tolkien plot to be based off of, which is where it might get dicey. They are basically going to make up a new story. If so, I'd like to see some Silmarillion references get brought into the movie. Tom Bombadil would be cool to see since he was omitted from Fellowship.

I can't wait to see how Mirkwood is visually displayed. And the Battle of 5 Armies must kick ass. Also, I think it's got potential to be rolling-in-the-aisles hilarious if they depict it well enough when all the dwarves start showing up at Bag End.

If any of you have read "Unfinished Tales," there is a short (15-20 pages) narrative that takes place in the intercalary period between The Hobbit and Fellowship.

Aragorn and Gandalf have quite the goings-on during this time. I would assume this is what they will base the second film on.

That's something that can easily be overlooked, even not knowing of the unfinished tales: Gandalf and Aragorn have a history (insert Ian Mckellan joke here - ha ha. OK, done now?). Gandalf knows enough to arrange that "Strider" meets the Hobbits at the Prancing Pony, and that's really the first the novels speak of him (at least that's what my memory is telling me).

It'll be very interesting to see if that's what the second Hobbit movie takes on.

I just had a terrible terrible thought.... they better not leave the battle at the end of the hobbit for F2... kinda like they did with Shelob in TTT.... ohhhh, that would get my blood boiling!!!

Well in two towers, there was too much going on with Helm's Deep and the Ents. I doubt they'll leave out the battle of five armies.

the scene when Bilbo and Gollum play the riddle game should be great!

I don't know what type of conflict there would be in the 2nd film.

Gandalf does go meet with Saruman a bit. Aragorn is busy chasing Sauron around. It culminates with Gandalf returning to the Shire and setting up the reasons why everyone is present in Rivendell. But I can't remember any conflicts of note...

I will have to go back and read it tonight.
