the under 300 Washburns beat out the under 300 Takamines, yamahas etc
This is very true.
I actually just bought a new Breedlove AC25/SM this past week and it is awesome. I was pretty much hell bent on a Takamine or Taylor and walked in to Guitar Center having no idea how awesome the Breedlove's sound.
I played the Takamine EG541SCC and really liked it. Then, I played the Taylor 110e and really liked that as well.
Then, the guy handed me the Breedlove and I was blown away. The action is perfect, the tone is great, it's vibrant. It's a concert style and it gives up no volume compared to the dreadnoughts.
I went home and read up on the Breedlove's on the internet for about 5 hours and didn't find a single bad review. I called the guy back at the Guitar Center and told him I wanted it and went back up that evening to buy it.
It was normally $799 and I got it for $599 on sale. For a $800-1200 guitar, I don't think you can beat the Breedlove quality right now.

http://www.zagerguitar.com/index.php?event=public.store.guitars.listBack to the original point though, if you are only willing to spend $300, go used and get a nicer guitar than what you can get for new. They had a very nice Takamine at the North Dallas GC for $359.
My first acoustic was a Washburn an it was great. The only thing I didn't care for was it had very high action, but other than that, it was an awesome guitar.
If you aren't ready to go for the $500-800 range, go used.
