Mine are on purina one-urinary tract health formula. I was at the store and noticed that there is a Felidae brand (by the makers of Canidae) and am considered switching. Theres a real tangible benefit to having cats eat a better food in just that you have to clean the litter box less as stools are smaller. What do you use and why?

I use regular Cat Chow. Because my cat is a jerk and that's as much as I'm willing to pay to feed him.

I wish I could find a place that sells the high quality stuff.

I do know that when I have the cats on "good" food, like Royal canin sp, they have smaller turds in litter box and they smell less stinky.

They shed less and have fewer hair ball issues.

cats are great companion animals, they are affectionate and have alot of personality, and require a fraction of the maintenance a dog does

plz dont hijack this thread with some cat-hating BS

Fraction less maintenance? How? Other than bathing them?

My boxer goes outside to use the bathroom, doesn't have hairballs, short hair that doesn't shed, etc

Wish my cat was affectionate. I think he's bipolar because he'll be sweet one minute and the next minute his ears go back and he bites me in the face!

Dax gets Iams for kittens. Next month she turns 1 and we will research our options.

in every way, what applies to dogs about raising them with attention and care (though they require much less) leads to a well-adjusted, affectionate, great pet.

Lewey is a sweet affectionate buddy of mine who hops into my lap while i'm at the computer. He lived in my dorm room at FHK and was really popular because he was so cool. Suey is more of a little princess because she wasn't socialized as much but is still sweet when she warms up to you, plus she has a beautiful silver coat.

my thread is completely hijacked, thank you ass.

Campers was a feral kitten who lived under our apartment complex. He had an eye infection which glued his eyes shut. He started walking out into the open and I was convinced he'd get run over.

So I took him to the vet and adopted him. He was only about 3 weeks old.

I was home that entire summer so he had my nearly constant attention.

But he has anger problems and simply is not nice to myself and my husband much of the time.

I had two cats for years growing up and neither ever bit or scratched me. This cat draws blood nearly every day.

I love cats and I even love Campers, but I don't know what I could have done differently with him.

thats too bad =( i dont know what to say, but you probably shouldnt subject yourself to that. that is really unfortunate.

BTH, if your cat is young, that is sort of to be expected. Our old man of a cat for the first nine months of his life would get a funny look in his eyes and become almost demonic--rinuung and fighting even though there was nothing to fight about.

At about a year that stopped. Now he is really old and I sometimes wish he had the playfulness back. He is fourteen.

3rdgen, i hope thats the case with his cat. Cats are naturally much more fickle than dogs so 'rehab' is almost a completely undeveloped thing in todays world

Campers is about 2 now and he still gets that demonic thing you're talking about. He is everything BTHO said and more.

Quite a handful.

Oh yeah....

We could feed our cat bargain basement food and let him poop a lot because our other "adopted off the street pet" Haven likes to eat the cat's poop. He finds it as quite the delicacy. I NEVER scoop poop from the litter pan, it's always pee clumps!

feces == toxic, dont let your dog eat it

We've tried, it's nearly impossible for us to be available to scoop the cat poop the second he does it.

my dog tries but i keep the litter box on top of the dryer so he cant get to it. cats jump higher than dogs.

After having one of my cats come down with feline diabetes, I will no longer give either cat dry food again. It is too high in carbohydrates. Cats need pretty much 100% protein.

cats are strict carnivores

the food you feed matters a great deal

cat feces really aren't that bad for dogs. the vet says that for some reasons, dogs think it's candy and they love it. one time, i had cleaned my cat box and left the bag on my balcony, because i didn't want to run all the way to the dumpster. I forgot about it, and put my puppy out there for a few minutes while i was cleaning. when i went out later, she had ripped the bag open and eaten EVERYTHING in it. i called the vet bc i was worried about everything she had ingested. they told me it wasn't a big deal, but told me to bring her in and pick up some zantac in case she had a stomach ache.

A high quality diet makes a huge difference. Beyond litter box issues, shedding and hairballs. There are going to be less trips to the vet, better dental health, lessened likelihood of kidney problems later in life, the list goes on and on.

On a side note; Purina, Iams and Eukanuba are NOT high quality diets. Vets are brainwashed by these companies in vet school and very few actually educate themselves on proper pet nutrition. They're also given incentives to recommend and sell these products, so they are rarely impartial. Read the ingredients on the back of the bag. If any of the first 3 ingredients is anything other than a protien source, find another brand. Cats (and dogs) don't need corn, wheat, rice or any other carbohydrate they stick in there as fillers.
You also want to watch out for "by-products" of the protein source. The nutritional value tends to be extremely low.

I'm glad people are starting to see the light (seemingly).

I've gotten more and more disappointed with vets over the past few years. I've talked to many and I've only found two that were *eager* to educate and share knowledge.
