Why does my dog scratch the walls at night?

A couple times a year I will wake up in the morning to find that our dog (7 yr old lab mix) has scratched a hole in the sheetrock during the night. She sleeps on her pillow on the other side of our room near the far wall. She's well-fed, doesn't act like she needs to go to the bathroom and not isolated - any ideas?

You don't hear this while it's going on in your room?? Sounds like a cat burglar's dream.

see a pet psychologist. I think when you mentioned it was a "she" explained a little bit of it.

Is it next to her sleeping area!

My dog will get nightmares some times and flail his little legs like one of them mice in that neverending wheel!

pet psychologist??? That's crazy! Just break her 2 front legs and she'll not be able to scratch a hole anymore. That's what I did to this snitch that was hanging around....I broke his legs. Now he can't hang around no more.

Is it a lab / blue heeler mix? I used to have one that did that. Gave her away when I moved back into the dorms.

That's my guess, too.

Doesn't happen only when it rains. I thought it might be when she's dreaming too, but it is more than a scratch - there's a big @ss hole in the sheetrock so it is from constant scratching.

I don't hear it because we sleep with a box fan on (for the noise; it's not near the dog) due to the yip yap dogs that live behind us and bark constantly all night long. It amazes me how dog owners think it is okay to leave their dog outside all night as it barks continuously for hours.

I don't think it's a rodent because it has now happened at two different houses and two different rooms within each house.

Rodents have legs, you know. And aren't confined to just one house.

It's pretty easy to get those dogs to stop barking at night.

All you need is a surgical scalpel.....or a knife, or a hammer, or a gun, or the heel of your boot.

We sleep with a box fan on too because of our neighbors barking dogs. And here I thought we were weirdos.

Yes, combat, but I think I would have probably heard the rodent at some point too over the three years this has been going on. And there hasn't been any other evidence of rodents at either house. (And I know what to look for since we had rats the size of small cats at our place (Sutter's Mill) in College Station when we moved in; you could hear them running around the ceiling at night. We had to take care of that since it was scaring the girls away).

Labs love to dig. It may just want to dig and when it can't get through the floor it goes to the wall. Try giving it more exercise; just try to run it out of them.
