I actually had this conversation with my brother this past June. (at that time he had broken up with his ugly, boring gf, whom he has absolutely NOTHING in common with).

Me: You know, you really shouldn't settle for someone just because you're lonely. Some of my female friends have told me you're a really good-looking guy. Seriously man, you could do a lot better. You really sell yourself short.

Him: Yeah, I know.

Needless to say, a couple months later they got back together and remain as such. Mind boggling, I tell you.
