Had a question about the racing form:

In the name of the race I see a circled f or a s or r in a box. What do these mean??

For example: S Md Sp Wt 12k

The S is in a box. I understand the rest of it (Maiden Special Weight 12000 purse) but what does the S mean. I'll see the same thing but with and R in the box or a circled f. I think the circled f is for "Fillies" (99% sure) but what's the S or R.

No, it's not track surface. You'll see that between the track name and 1/4 times. A circled t is turf and I've seen a circled x. Not sure what that means.

I am trying to get a horse racing guru to help you out, but he needs more detail. Can you post an image of the form?

Is it the steroid or medication that a horse is on?

I've only got the hard copy.

My best guess is the S with the box defines a special restriction (.i.e. for Texas accredited horses only).

So: [S]Clm20000N3L

is a $20000 claiming race for horses with less than 3 lifetime wins with some other restriction thrown in there. Which you don't know on past races. If it's the current race it will say in the race description.

S = Race for state-breds only
F = Race for fillies, or filies and mares
R = Restricted race for horses who meet certain conditions
