There was a special on it up here in Ohio and I got duped into watching it at 2 in the morning.

What exactly do you recall that made it so harsh?

I'm talking about the people who lived I-20 northward during that time.

I was still just a fetus during it.

Waco had like 15 days or so below freezing. Lots of slushy roads...trees fell on utility lines, generally a big mess here.

LOL Sensei.

We got a foot of snow at the house. San Antonio had roughly 18 inches and numerous roofs collapsed from the weight of the snow.

We kids sure loved missing school though...biggest snowman I've ever built.

Yes, I remember.

Jan. 11, 1983. If you grow up in South Texas and see snow, you remember it like it was the day a war started. That's how rare real snow is down there.

A foot and a half of snow at my parent's farm (I was 12) west of San Antonio. It had a coat of ice on top, so you could walk (or at least 12 year old me could) on top of it.

The freeze busted our windmill and the water gushed out the top. Then it froze again, turning said windmill into a giant ice sculpture.

I got out the camera and my sister, who was 18, put on her bikini and did some funny poses on the diving board of the pool, as if she were about to jump in.

HORRIBLE WINTER!!! Made me realize to never ever consider moving north of the Red River! In Dallas, it was just awful! It actually started right after Christmas 1982 and went into late January 1983... there was a 30 day stretch in Dallas where the temperature (including the high) never got above freezing.... pipes were bursting everywhere, we had two or three awful ice storms....! White Rock Lake in Dallas froze over and there were people ice skating and even a few idiots driving cars on the frozen lake..... just horrible!

I remember it. The big tank on the land behind our house froze solid and we were able to go and walk around on it. That's the only time it has ever happened in my lifetime.

Everybody knows the winter of 1983 was just an expirement by the government on controlling the weather.

Had a grand ol' time in the Hill Country that year. Most snow I have ever seen in Texas.

I think some of you are confusing the winters.

January 1985 was when San Antonio received 10-15" of snow.

The winter before, Dec '83, was bone-chillingly cold in South Texas at Christmas. The temps (in S.A.) stayed below freezing for about 4-6 days straight.

Speedbird, you may be right. 1985 is right, now that I think of it. But I do remember it was Jan. 11 for some reason.

By the way, for all you global warming skeptics out there, I would simply point out that Santa Anna's Army marching from the Rio Grande Valley to the Alamo in Jan. 1836 got caught in a blizzard.

I think you are right... 1985. Thinking of it, I was too old and my brother was too old for it to be '83.

I can remember getting over a week off from school in the Panhandle because of all the snow. The snow drift actually went over part of our house and we had a kick ass snow fort.

I was 13. Dad bought me a radio flyer sled. There was a littel hill by our house that led to many crashes into the frozen creek. Good times.
