So last night one of my friends and I were having a discussion about taquitos. He says that the term "taquito" was NOT coined by Whataburger, and that it is an interchangable word for "breakfast taco".

Do you think he's right or wrong?

http://www.quiktrip.com/food/taquitos.asp

The origin of the QuikTrip Taquito has been translated by archaeologists from inscriptions on the Pyramid of the Sun in Teotihuacan. The original pronunciation of this delicacy was Taquiktripito. Apparently the Taquito was a gift from Quatzequatel, the winged serpent god of the Mayan culture. Quatzequatel was a benevolent god, filled with goodness, as was the QuikTrip Taquito that he lovingly bequeathed to his followers.

Later, Spanish explorers discovered this wonderful meal and sent an armada of ships back to Spain filled with Taquitos. Unfortunately, the fleet was lost at sea, although there were rumors the crews of the ships had eaten all the Taquitos en route and were afraid to return home. This theory has been supported by a study conducted by Don Miguel Fernandez, who discovered what appeared to be remnants of a manually operated roller grill on the island of Grenada. Along with these artifacts was the original Mayan recipe for the Taquito, which has been translated and carefully followed to produce the ultimate QuikTrip Taquito.

QuikTrip Taquitos are the perfect meal on the go. Nearly a foot of crisp meat-filled tortillas are kept hot and fresh on sparkling clean roller grills at every QuikTrip store. QuikTrip offers two varieties of Taquitos, beef and chicken, with just enough spice to awaken your taste buds. The best part of this great meal is that Taquitos are only 99 cents. Quatzequatel would be proud!

Growing up in the Rio Grande Valley, I know for a fact that "taquito" was not coined by WB. It is a unversal term for breakfas taco. Say Uncle and admit defeat. I hope this ends this worthless thread. There is also no such thing as a Chimichanga. Never heard of one until I moved out of the Valley.

Chimichanga was invented in Arizona. It is a real thing though, you can eat one and everything.

taquito rojo = little red taco?

Yes it literally translates to little taco. Which makes sense as taquitos are traditionally smaller than your latter day meal tacos.

Well, I've never heard the term used outside of the realm of Whataburger. The 6 other people who were with us agreed, so at least I wasn't the only one.

Go to Acuna, Matamoros, Juarez, Reynosa and say:
Yo quiero un taquito. and you will be directed to a place that sells what you are looking for. It won't be Whataburger either. Don't say anything about a burro though, you will be thoroughly suprised by where you end up.

Yes, it's perfectly logical that Whataburger came up with a new Spanish word. [/sarcasm]

taquito is no a breakfast taco, a taquito is any dish that involves some food wrapped by a tortilla.

It could be possible.

Look at Gordita's at Taco Bell

I always thought Gordita was a nice way to call someone fat.

edit: I stated that wrong. I meant I could see how some people would have thought that. I knew that it was a mexican term.

Gorditas are called that because the tortilla is not as thin and usually you don't wrap the gordita around the filling, real gorditas look like chalupas.

Any one remember the Taco Bell advertising from the mid-eighties? Apparently, they had just added fajita meat to the menu, but were afraid no one would know how to pronounce it.

The advertising declared (over and over) to say "fa-HEE-ta".

That still bugs the crap out of me 20 years later.

That's a gordita (little pocket) not what Taco Bell has led you to believe, and not the same as a chalupa (pile o whatever). For some reason even if you can find 'real gorditas' in Central Texas it's like two pancakes with stuff in between- pathetic!

FYI Best Gorditas around can be found at the Little Diner in Canutillo TX right next to the laundromat and across the street from the graveyard...
