I don't even know how to describe them. I usually see them when I'm outside on a clear day. What the hell are those things?

a nice thick covering of tin-foil over your scalp will prevent them from stealing your thoughts.

They are just making up floaters... it's actually a serious disease and you need surgury real soon, or you could go blind.

Dude, I see them all the freaking time. I'm "seeing" one as I type.

Do you ever see the ones that are strung together, maybe 20 or more in a 'chain'?

Also, mine aren't really dots. They're more like circles with a dot in the middle.

When I was a kid I tried explaining these "dots" to one of my cousins. I remember pointing at one and saying, "do you see that? tell me you see that!"

Exactly! Do they always float downward? Is it because of gravity or your bloodstream? What if I stood on my head, would they go the other direction? Do astronauts see floaters in space? ??????
NICE!

Well, some of mine actually float up, especially when I hold my breath.

You're the first person I don't know to ever mention the "dot" phenomenon.

There should be books or at least a documentary on these damn things.

I've got something similar, little dots and squiggly lines of discoloration that float in front of my vision. They're kind of like the afterimage you get if you look into a bright light. I always figured I'd burned my retinas by staring at the sun or something when I was little.

Used to get those quite a bit when I wore contacts. Right eye was 20/375, left eye was 20/100. Even with contacts in, my left eye was compensating for the right eye, and I suppose would get a little more worn out at the end of the day, I'd see more floaters in that eye. After LASIK, I don't see them as often. Mostly, when I have not gotten enough sleep, spent too much time in front of the computer screen, or have been in the sun too long.

Most floaters are completely normal and harmless. They form when a small capillary in your eye breaks and leaks a little blood into your vitreous, the jelly part of your eye. What you see is the debris and "junk" from that leakage including cells and fibrous material. They can be annoying, especially when they form big clumps, knots, or strand like things, especially so when you're driving or outside on a bright day. It's one of those things that you just have to put up with sometimes.

***The exception to the above is when one of your eyes has been completely normal and now all of the sudden you have a lot of floaters in it. Just out of the blue. This is a very important warning sign that you could be about to have a retinal detachment. The first sign of a retinal detachment is a new onset of lots of floaters, and then about a day or two days later nearly everyone reports seeing "fireworks" or flashes of light going off in that eye. This is from the retina actually pulling away from the back of your eye sending electrical impulses like crazy to your brain. This is an ophthalmic emergency and you need to see an eye surgeon immediately if you want to save your retina and your vision in that eye.

That's clear, can you see it?

You can see them because often they have irregular surfaces, which cast shadows on the back of the eye. Many are just spherical, so all you see are the tiny outlines.

These are called floaters. they are particals from the inside of your eye that float around in the same general area. If you are real near sighted, you tend to have them more. If you are noticing a bunch of them appearing over a short period of time, you need to see an eye doctor as in MD. not an optometrist. It could indicate detaching retnas etc. But likely nothing to worry about.

Any eye problems are serious. I usually have to call in to work due to recurrent anal glaucoma.

You didn't put the smiley face for a sarcastic post, so I can only pray and hope you meant that to be silly.

I see the floaters too every now and then. When I was younger I thought it was pretty cool.

I had floaters (the small black variety) in my left eye for quite some time. I later had a catarract removed from that eye and since then have not noticed any floating critters. The professionals to see regarding eye problems of this nature are Opthamologists. They are MDs and are eye specialists. Optometrists just do glasses and contact fittings.
