The definitive list of the best places to eat in Beaumont:
Overall (value): Brad's. Burgers, salads, sandwiches, gumbo - Brad piles on the calories, but each and every one is worth it.
Overall (regardless of cost): Bryan's, near Brad's. Be prepared to drop a Benjamin or two if you bring a date.
Chinese: Great China (already mentioned) on Calder, just east of I-10, is popular. I have different and higher standards than most Texans, so I wasn't overwhelmed, but it's consistently selected as the city's favorite.
Vietnamese: L&T's (already mentioned), on College.
Tex-Mex: Carlito's, Elena's, Chula Vista, and Carmelo's are all about the same. I'm not a huge Tex-Mex fan, but others speak well of them.
Italian: Carlo's, on Calder around 9th street
Seafood: Sartin's
BBQ: Willy Ray's BBQ, on the southbound I-10 frontage road. Named America's best BBQ by NBC's Today show. They serve plates as well as an All-You-Can-Eat option. Broussard's Links & Ribs is also popular. Patillo's, on 11th north of Calder, is also good for links, pork, chicken, and dirty rice. There's a definite cajun influence, and it's the oldest place in town. Personally, I don't care for their brisket at all - it's not Texas BBQ-style
Frilly Ladies' Lunch place: The Green Beanery. IIRC, it's around 6th and Hazel.
Steak: Brazos Cattle Company, I guess. I'd probably go to Outback, myself. There's not that many good steak places.
Others of note: I'm a big fan of P-Reaux's, on MLK near Liberty. Great value, good home-style cooking, friendly folks. The lunch special changes daily, but they always have AYCE catfish on Fridays. The first time I went, it was the best catfish I'd ever eaten. It's never been quite that good since, but it's always excellent.
Richard's Cafe on College is also good, serving soul food and home cooking in a hospitable atmosphere. They've got a big steam table where you can place your order, and they do soul food right, in addition to cajun-influenced dishes like gumbo.
Poblano Grill on Dowlen is popular for a more upscale, fancy crowd. I'm not a huge fan of the food, but it's okay and the drinks are nice.
Rocky's Roadhouse does a decent burger and has a nice beergarden
There's also the standard assortment of chains. Notables include Pappadeaux's, Outback, Carraba's, Ninfa's, and BW3. There's supposedly a Pappasito's scheduled for construction, but you'll probably be gone before it opens.
