For tex-mex, there is nowhere better than jacala. (Tex-mex=queso/enchiladas/homemade tortillas)
For drinks, La Fogata and El Mirasol are the best.

I like Mi Tierra's - had a Margarita there that was part elephant tranquilizer. I hope the restaurant has been remodeled since they converted it to a shrine for Celina.

Rita's Fiesta Cafe (W. Ashby and Woodlawn)

Anything outside of 410 is crap.
Anything outside of 1604 is mega crap.

Stay away from corp. chains or places with a goat on the sign.

I ate at Mi Tierra about three months ago. I thought it was extraordinarily average. Other than being open 24 hours, I didn't see what the hype was about.

3 months, you have not been looking very hard...

It took me about 15 minutes to find Jacala's

La Margarita in the mercardo area ain't too bad, but definitely not the best

Mi Tierra's/Pico De Gallo (same owners)
La Margarita has great fajitas
all three good for groups

Yes La Fonda is still in Heights on N New Braunfels just north of Austin Hwy

The one by Hills and Dales with the alphabet name is really good but really crowded at lunch

Not for a party but try Teka Molino and their tasty bean roll

Inside/outside the loop is BS. El Bosque on West Ave, south of Bitters, is good and quiet and outside 410. Marthas is also surpisingly good. La Posada Del Rey in heights(by Paesanos)and 281 at Brookhollow is also good.

Karams is good but on a seedy side of town.

I can't believe some of the responses I'm seeing. Los Barrios. The best of the big name places. Try some of the mole dishes. I will agree that some of the "mom and pop" places might be your favorite, but it is a gamble. Personally, and I can't remember the name, my favorite "mom and pop" place is this hole in the wall near my dad's office. They do Vera Cruz style Mexican food. It is on Vance Jackson near 410. Actually, there is this middle school and it is a little farther up on the right.

Oh, and it is Salina. Celina is her Canadian cousin.

I haven't been back in a couple months but please answer me this one question: Is HEB still selling Spurs votive candles? I remember seeing them a couple years ago during the second title run and laughing my butt off. I mean, you got Jesus, Mary, Jesus and Mary, and the Spurs. What a town.

Holy toledos, I am a newbie to this site and had no idea I'd get so many replies! Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

And for the guy who wanted me to post a pic . . . why?

The best authentic Mexican food is Paloma Blanca on Broadway. Great place for a party as well, great atmosphere. Food is incredible.

La Jacala is also very good, best borracho beans around.

La Fogata is very good as well.

The best La Fonda's is on Main near downtown. Really good atmosphere there as well.

Rosarios is excellent also.

Mi Tierra is overpriced due to the touristy nature of its location. But it is historic, since it's been there forever. Food is above average; very colorful atmosphere.

They've always had excellent breakfasts and menudo as far back as I can remember.
