So I've lived in San Antonio now for 3 months, and have yet to eat some good mexican food. I don't know where to go! So I thought I'd get everyone's opinion on where the best mexican food is in San Antonio. I'd like to have a birthday bash there in a few weeks, so it definitely has to be somewhere that has good drinks, too!

Thanks!

You may be eating good Mexican food, you might just not realize it.

Most of the mom and pop places actually have pretty good Mexican food.

I like El Jarro de Arturo (281/Bitters). My wife likes Los Barrios. Rosarios is good. La Fogata is good (great Margaritas, too) but they're not quite your typical tex-mex. There's always Pappasito's, too.

There are more. Hell, even Martha's is pretty good, in my opinion (and cheap!) Same with Bee's. (or is that Bea's?)

Oh man, oh man, oh man....where do I start.

I detest the chain restaurants. If any bozo on this board suggests Alama Cafe, they don't know what they're talking about. The secret to enjoying culinary success in SA is finding those little mom and pop places. Here's a few that I visit when I'm there. Granted, some of these places...go with someone, but they are in generally safe areas.

- Blanco Cafe
- La Fogata
- Henry's Puffy Tacos
- Los Barrios
- Brown's Enchiladas

This time of year is good for cabrito. Johnny's , just outside the south gate of Ft Sam Houston, is the best in Texas for this. Rough neighborhood.

I'm drawing a blank on a couple of others, but I'll return to this thread when they pop back in.

El Mirador, downtown. Go on Saturdays, when they serve their soups! They use recipes direct from the Aztecs for these, and they are very good. They are also good at all other times.

- Taqueria Vallarta...for breakfasts. They're not
as good for lunch or dinner. On Gen McMullen.

- La Fonda; on broadway. Served gringo style, in stylish Alamo Heights, but good regardless.

Casa Del Rio is decent and El Chap is the bomb? Puhlease. Chap may be Helotes' finest but that is not saying much. Casa Del Rio is drop it like its hot and worth the drive into downtown.

I second TxOilBaron's choice.

Mi Tierra is awesome Mexican food. It is in a great location Downtown in El Mercado (Market Square) only a few blocks from the Riverwalk. It is very authentic Mexican food and they have great drinks and a bakery as well...you should definitely consider it for a birthday bash.

Rosarios is the clear number one.
El Jarro is number two.
If you are looking for cheap to go food, you can't beat Las Palapas.

El Mirasol on Blanco Rd is my wife's number one.

I'm fond of Rosario's as well.

Heard great things about Henry's Puffy Taco.

Great call on Henry's Puffy Tacos,

also try Rolando's Super Taco for breakfast

Rosario's is good. As a rule of thumb if you're north of HWY 90, you're still too far north.

Really though, not sure if it's the "BEST", but head out highway 16 to Helotes and try El Chapperal.

Texarkana, we used to have an On the Border and they tore it down and built a Macaroni's Grill. I guess that tells you how SA feels about On the Border!

Could have something to do with the fact that OTB sucks donkey balls. It tastes like "Tex-Mex" tastes at restaurants in the northeast. Awful.

I forgive all of you since y'all probably haven't eaten here yet, but ...

Taqueria Aguascalientes

It's over at Babcock & 1604 next door to Hills & Dales. Damn tasty, great chips & salsa, and large portions. You cannot go wrong here. I think they're open 6a-3p daily, so don't go there for dinner.

I think that is the "original" La Fonda, and it closed several years back. The other is just off 410 and Fredricksburg.

The place I like is Piedras Negras just south of downtown on I-35.
