The new law HAS gone into effect!!! They made an announcement on the radio this morning that we were lied to and the law went into effect after ten days. People are getting warning tickets, guess we should be grateful that's all they're getting. Haven't been to Northgate to see for myself, maybe some of you guys can confirm.

they said on the news that they would give warning citations for 60-90 days

Yet another reason why Bryan-College Station should combine services, the CS police would then have something to do....

Time for a kegger!

If any CS city council members read this -

I have moved my drunken obnoxiousness from Northgate to YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD, as Northgate is usually packed to the point of immobility - and that was when you COULD drink on the promenade. I hope you enjoy my company and I. We drink and drive through your child-filled streets, stay up at all hours of the night and create messes equivalant to that of Chilifest that lower your property value.

Noise Violations/citations? Hah! 200 people at a party can chip in $1.50 and pay for the damn thing. Have fun with your new, louder neighbors.

No one lied, it was clearly stated that the law would go into effect 10 days after passage, but warnings would be issued for the first 60 to educate the public. It's in the City Council minutes and is clearly stated in the meeting on TV.

Don't go spouting off if you don't know what happened.

Maybe if you weren't so obnoxious, the ordinance would never have had to be passed in the first place.

I wish they could have just banned coolers and kegs, but apparently that wasn't an option (from TABC).

So now you plan to go party in Pebble Creek? Good luck with that.

What would be the problem of building a giant roof over the promenade, fencing it in and have it be a large open area where people could socialize with frosted beverages? If the bars at northgate chip in and buy that property together, it wouldn't be public property anymore.

Each bar could still have their doormen that filter the ingoing and outpouring customers, and the promenade could be used as over-fill space.

Maybe this has been proposed, but I can't keep completely up with this, as studying takes up most of my reading time.

so is drinking in parks or anywhere in a public place anywhere in cs outlawed now as well? or just the backporch? for instance is it gonna be illegal to drink at tailgates now before football games?

glad that my time @ A&M was not during the College Station Prohibition period. I feel sorry for those students that will not get the full Northgate experiance.

Every football weekend that I can remember I recall visiting team fans saying things such as "Man, this is great, how everyone just hangs out back here and drinks, and its legal. Do yall do this all the time or only footbal games? No, every weekend its like this (not as big, but still people hanging out) It's a shame that the city couldn't find another solution, such as increasing the # of trash cans and having them emptied during the night, among other things.

oh well--i've got my Northgate memories...too bad future ags memories will be of a bunch of bars that are so packed that you can't even order a drink

Greenmask04,
What are you? Like 12? Back when I was in school in the early 90's you couldn't legally drink back there. First of all, it was a trashy parking lot. It's only been about the last 5 or 6 years that you could even drink out there. HARDLY a long standing Aggie tradition. Give it a couple of years and only "old timers" like yourself will even remember "those days" and if someone trys to say that this is another "old Army" tradition dying away, I'm going to jump in my computer and smack them.

Yeah, you aren't going to get much sympathy from 99% of graduates who were not there during the free spirited 4 or 5 years that the drinking promenade existed.

The only thing I remember about that area was that it only fit about 10 oversized pickup trucks and I ended up parking about 10 blocks away if I wasn't there early.

I couldn't(please not the COULDN'T instead of more widely misused COULD) care less if you can't drink outside. Maybe it will force more folks to go to the Tap so I can enjoy Dudley's in peace.

Try that in my neighborhood, junior. I will pop a cap in your a$$, if I'm feeling generous and don't aim for your head. Threatening to hurt children because your whiny little ***** a$$ can't stumble around drunk on Norhtgate is about the stupidest thing I have ever heard. I don't care if you are an Aggie or not, don't try this in my neighborhood because you will receive retalitation from Mr. Remington.

you will still be able to drink behind northgate during football weekends... the bars have made it clear that they will buy a permit for this.

also, this rule is only for the promenade, you can still drink wherever out on the streets in CS and still tailgate before football games.

Not taking sides, but the ordinance was passed because the bar owners got together and had it passed.

The Promenade was once considered a giant waste a tax payers money when it was lying vacant all day and all night. Then, when it was discovered that people could congregate there, it created a great atmosphere and a much safer place to drink than at parties scattered throughout B/CS. It was not the hazard that Aggie Alley was. Carpool, and the proximity to Northside Dorms made it safe.

Unfortunately, because the bar owners saw a minor dropoff in revenue, it is going to return to the giant waste of tax payer money it was when construction finished.

Not quite true. LEGALLY, you could, there just wasn't really any space to.

You couldn't be more wrong.

CSPD had a hell of a time policing the place over the summer - and not just for MIPs. There were brawls breaking out several times a week. CSPD approached the city council and said something needed to be done and suggested the ban. I don't think it was their best solution, but something needed to be done. The bar owners had zilch to do with initiating this.

When I say "I" I collectively mean "Joe Student"

Im not complaining that I "cant stumble drunk around northgate." I don't mind not paying $4 for a beer when i can sit at home, tap a keg and get 200 beers out of it for $50 (1/10 of the cost).

Im not threatening your kids, Im not hunting them down in my car, and I certainly don't want to hurt them. Kids are a part of this town. Same as college students - were all part of a community. When you remove students from previously designated drinking areas, the childrens' safety is put into jeopardy because we live in a community together and have to share streets.

Its not like I care about property value - I rent here for 4 years, then leave. It's not my property value that suffers.

I hope i pointed out where this city council decision went wrong, and what was not thought about. Don't blame me, blame city council.

Who gives a sh*t? If you want to have a party, use your backyard. Don't have a backyard? Find someone who does or quit b**ching.

Quit whining about something that won't change anytime soon. People found ways to get drunk at Northgate when it was a muddy stink hole back there, and I think they will be able to find a way now.

And, BOHICA... I still want to know who the heck you are?????

Alcoholics go to Meetings, Drunks go to Bars.

That's what Im saying Wadd - partying will move from northgate to the neighborhoods of college station. Personally, I don't mind having a party in my backyard (i do all the time), but im a student, not a resident. Its the neighborhoods that aren't going to like this.

My bet is they don't solve this problem. The fights were from having a bunch of drunken people hanging out primarily late in the evening. Not allowing people to drink out there isn't going to slow that down.

Drunken people are still going to come out of the bars to get away from the crowds and they are still going to run into each other and get into stupid fights. The problem is the combination of the promenade itself attracting people out of the bars and the 2am last call holding people there till they are much drunker than they used to be.

We will see what the report says in 6 months.

New Orleans is the only place I can think of where you can walk down the street with alcohol. The Promenade was beginning to smell a lot like Boubon Street. Is that what everyone wants?

I like the atmosphere at the Northgate promenade as much as anyone (mainly because I don't have to go in the crowded bars) but maybe the answer to the problem is to build more establishments- not to cry about an ordinance that exists in every other city (besides aforementioned NO).

i always am amazed at how worked up some people get on this place. its just an internet forum----relax.

The Northgate area was great for a few years, and yes, those that went through school the same time as I did will think of it as Old Army if it no longer is allowed down the road. Shoot me if that is illegal and I should be banished for saying it.

guitman has a valid point. a centralized area for nightlife is always going to be easier on city services to manage then a decntralized (i.e. neighberhood parties)

Man I didnt even think about ring dunkings. That sucks. Wonder what most people will do now. I guess either throw a party at their house or wait till its a gameday or "special event" when people can drink out there.
