Salsa. Hot sauce is "hot" stuff related to, and including Tabasco. Not the fairly mild, tomato-ey stuff called salsa.

Pico de Gallo = Chunky, no juice
Salsa = Chunky, juicy
Hot sauce = ingredients ground to a liquid

Although chunky pico de gallo does have juice, it's just mainly lime juice and whatever juice leaks out of the tomatos. Mine is superb, by the way.

Picante is what I call "salsa". I can't bring myself to say "salsa" ever since the Seinfeld episode about it.

The pureed stuff served at most "Mexican" restaurants in Dallas I call "crap".

So you're in a restaurant, and you're like, "Hey waitress...Can we get some more picante sauce?"

That sounds queer to me.

GEORGE: Why don't they have salsa on the table?

JERRY: What do you need salsa for?

GEORGE: Salsa is now the number one condiment in America.

JERRY: You know why? Because people like to say "salsa." "Excuse me, do
you have salsa?" "We need more salsa." "Where is the salsa? No salsa?"

GEORGE: You know it must be impossible for a Spanish person to order
seltzer and not get salsa. (Angry) "I wanted seltzer, not salsa."

JERRY: "Don't you know the difference between seltzer and salsa?? You
have the seltezer after the salsa!"

Note the use of the word "soupy" to describe it. It's not quac, it's...something else. As tree91 puts it, "green sauce." I just wondered if it had another name.

I'll bet you think Tia's has just yummy Mexican food, too!

My grandmother moved to Mission in 1908! My wife's family moved to northern Mexico/South Texas in the friggin' 1700's!

I THINK my Mexican food credentials are in order, thank you very much.

I like pico. When I think picante, I think Pace and that crap is awful.

green sauce = verde

I say verde and salsa. It's the proper terms, vatos.

the green sauce at los cucos in cs is great. 99 cent margaritas and the green sauce makes that my choice on mondays or tuesdays

and salsa is not "yankee" for hot sauce. in the north, there is salsa---which you use on chips, hot sauce, which as others posted--is similar to tobasco. picante is the word that I don't understand---just always sounds funny to me.

Indeed. I am fond of the sangria margarita there myself.

"picante" means, roughly, "spicy" or "hot spicy" - similar to the "pica" which means "sharp" (as in a needle) but is also used to indicate hot food (not temperature hot). It's similar to "piquant" in English.

"mas picante, por favor" just rolls off the tongue. Although yes "salsa" is used (I meant what I said about the Seinfeld episode), I believe that, in the Valley at least, you'll find the term picante to be more common.

On second look, "picante sauce" does sound wierd, but it's because the word "sauce" is unneeded as in "Hey waiter, bring us some more picante."
