My friends and I want to go camping on the beach in a couple weeks for a night. I was looking and Galveston Island State Park near Jamaica Beach looks to be the best spot. Anybody ever been there before or any other camp ground on the island. Our goal is to get to camp as close to the water as possible. Any advice?

Good advice.

Also, you might notice where the sand is nice and smooth, down below the weed line...

Don't camp there.

And/or check a tide chart and weather forecast.

Tent flap on the lee side.

Don't take anything to eat that doesn't taste good with sand in it.

The mosquitoes all along the coast can be completly miserable, but they might not be a problem because it's winter.

In my opinion, Galveston beaches are all about the same as far as appearance. The only difference is the fishing and the numbers of people. I personally like San Luis Pass, it is less crowded and the fishing can be pretty good, but it's further south.

Seriously though, tent-camping on the beach can get uncomfortable really fast. Leave anyone who complains alot at home. It's not nearly as pleasent as it sounds. I've camped in some pretty lousy places, and a couple of my beach experiences rate among the worst.

San Louis Pass is without the doubt the best place to go camping on the beach. We used to have a house in jamaica beach and i dont know why you waould want to do it there. The Pass is one of the only spots left on the island you can drive on the beach, just not on any vegetation cuase that is a huge fine. There are a few people out there on nice weekends, but nothing near overcrowded. The fishing there is also pretty good, just watch out for the strong currents.

you would think the mosquitos wouldn't be bad, but i was just down in Gilchrist last weekend and they were HORRIBLE. You couldn't have the windows open without being devoured by them. It was horrible...

Where is San Louis Pass in relation to Jamaica Beach?

San Luis Pass is west of Jamaica Beach, roughly 20 or so miles from the intersection of 61st and Seawall. And as the above poster mentioned, the mosquitoes are still out in full force. I have about 20 bites from this past weekend.

Yeah the pass is about 10-15 minutes past jamiaca beach, it's the western tip of the island. You can drive on the beach for about 2 and a half miles. If you want to be all alone i would say stop about a mile from the actual pass and set up shop, if you want more people and more beach/water (not just a straight line beach and coast) then go all the way down to the pass

Is it against the law to camp on the beach at San Luis Pass? I would like to stay on the beach if possible, but should I plan on getting a campground?

Snoop,

Took the family to Galveston SP several Spring Breaks ago. The park itself in not on the beach (sand), it's more up in the dune area. The camp sites are not sandy and there are small shelters over a picnic table. The beach itself is just over the dunes a short walk away.

For Spring Break it was not crowded, only about half full. We had no trouble and enjoyed our stay. No real fishing pier or such but you could drive down to the pass or wade fish in the gulf.
