Dear Partners,

It is with many emotions that I am sending this email as an official notice of format change on rock 101 KLOL. As of today, rock 101 will no longer exist. The station will be re-launched as MEGA 101.1. The station will feature a cutting edge Span-glish format with a hip hop/urban sound. Due to the dynamic nature of the Houston population, we feel this change is necessary as we pursue every possible avenue for better servicing the local community.

On behalf of rock 101 and Clear Channel, I want to thank all of you for your partnership over the 34 year span of this station. Your investment in KLOL has produced many special memories for many people.

For those of you who currently have schedules booked on KLOL, you will be contacted by a Clear Channel representative with a plan for moving forward.

I want to thank you in advance for your cooperation during this transition. Please feel free to contact me with your questions at 713-212-8560.

Sincerely,

Paul

I'll bet my KLOL runaway radio jacket I got when I worked there just jumped up in value.

Clear Channel just sucks. You could hear the fear and reluctance in the voice of the dj's whenever they had to voice clearchannel's political position.

For example, how can someone like "outlaw dave" wax poetic on the genius of comedian Bill Hicks and then turn around and unload a full-on barrage against anything and everything liberal? It was just weird and didn't work.

Send an e-mail if you are going to miss the old format. http://www.clearchannel.com/Corporate/Email.aspx

I did. I told 'em Clear Channel just lost a listener because I'm switching to the point.

I'd like to say I will miss KLOL, but they lost me back during Stevens & Pruitt. I don't know if I grew out of them or if their potty humor dropped below even my low standards, but I just didn't get that show. Furthermore, their format seemed trite and unimaginitive. I can only tolerate the same Metallica, AC/DC, and Van Halen songs so many times. For years it seemed like they had been coasting on the inertia they had developed in the 80's and early 90's.

I would like to shed a tear, but the sowed the seeds of their own demise.

By the way, I once called CollegeStationAgFan once when he worked there. He never did come through on Stones tickets for me .

I cannot believe that they changed the format on a 35 year old radio station. The LAST thing Houston needs is another Tejano/Hispanic/Whatever station. I don't know how many Tejano stations there already are in Houston, but my best estimate is a crap load.

Why not take some of your vast resources and build the station back up, instead of tearing it down. It wasn't too long ago that KLOL was #1 with men 25-54. Of course, that was before Clear Channel, in it's infinite wisdom, decided to heave Walton and Johnson on us.

Agreed on the song selection, Burdizzo. But there aren't many rock stations like that in Houston, so it beat the alternative most of the time.

I only listen to radio in the car. So evenm though ther play list was somewhat repetetive with respect to which songs they played I LIKED it.

I am still really pissed off. The next best station is a sad substitute.

Probably off the air. They were always complaining that Clear Channel has never really held up their side of the bargain with respect to the number of stations & markets.

You may have liked them, but when S&P were there, KLOL was always in the top 12, which means ratings-wise, they finished in the money. After WA&J took over, the station never broke into the top 20.

I know that money talks, but there were ways of fixing that station instead of running it into the ground.

Wow, Houston is now officially without a rock station because 94.5 plays crap. Now all we have is a ton of crappy pop stations and tejano music. Damn you clearchannel! Now i'm really glad i got XM radio.

I grew up listening to that station (and 97 Rock) so I'm surprised to say the least. But I have to admit the programming was pretty stale. I wonder where Walton and Johnson will end up? I was listening to them when they were still in New Orleans.

And oh yeah, CCC sucks big donkey dxxxs.

On Walton & Johnson's website:
quote:
17 years ago one of the top rated morning shows in Dallas/Ft Worth disappeared from the air one Friday morning without explanation to a large and mostly befuddled audience. Walton & Johnson recieved a call on the Thursday evening before informing them that KISS 106 would be "The Oasis" in the morning and would be playing New Age music instead of the Walton and Johnson Show. Sadly we headed to HOT 97 in New York City and many people in the Metroplex did not find out what happened to the show or why until years later.

Thursday night W&J were informed by lower level management sources via a last minute phone call (class and ethics never go out of style) that there would be no W&J Show tomorrow. In it's place would be Hispanic music programs.

Now, 17 years later we can at least use the internet to keep you 10 percenters abreast of the latest developments.

Here's what we know now:

As of Friday morning 11/11/04 our current flagship station KLOL FM in Houston will become yet another spanish station for Houston and W&J have emphatically not been offered a Clear Channel alternative. You will no doubt hear or read corporate spin as to how the show just did not work out in Houston. Don't you buy it. In the lastest morning ratings W&J were the top ranked (non-ethnic) morning show in Houston in our target 25-54 demographic. We had great trepidation early on about associating the show with CC Radio since they had a well documented history of hiring away successful shows that they could not beat in other markets and then icing them when they thought it safe to do so. But we accepted the risk because the lure of putting our beloved show on the air in our own hometown seemed to outweigh the risk of this type of competition elimination. In this case we think they were confounded by our success in spite of a complete lack of support in marketing, advertising, and PR by CC Radio for the Walton and Johnson Show. Since we have now built a large and loyal listener base that exceeded the performance of the base radio station on a regular basis we do not intend to throw it away and leave Houston. This is our home and we will not be disposed of so easily. Houston listeners keep checking this website and we will let you know where to find us.

As for New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Biloxi, College Station, and Lufkin.....

Since WRNO FM in New Orleans is also now owned by Clear Channel we will also be off the air briefly in The Big Easy. SInce W&J are always at the top of the ratings and a proven audience mover and money maker, we suspect that other parties will be interested in broadcasting the show. It is too early to determine who...but we will let you know on this website the minute we negotiate that one.

We are unsure about Eagle 98.1 in Baton Rouge/Lafayette since they are owned and operated by Guauranty Broadcasting. We are almost always on top there also so it seems very reasonable that Eagle or someone else will want to keep the show on the air in Red Stick...GEAUX TIGERS.

Judging from calls and emails the show seemed to be catching on rapidly in Biloxi/Gulfport.... Since our affiliate there is not a Clear Channel station (there are a few left who are not)...we will let you know how that one shakes out...right now without a flagship station the show will be difficult to distribute. But will get back on ASAP on the Mississippi Coast.

Since College Station and Lufkin are both Clear Channel owned and operated I suspect we may lose you guys (for awhile at least)...once again judging from the volume of calls and email the show seemed to be getting traction in Aggieland and the Piney Woods..we hope we can get back on there soon because we really enjoyed serving you.

Walton and Johnson sucked. They made [past tense - haha] listening to morning radio unbearable.

Clear Channel sucks. Everything they do is 'suck.' They are killing music. Look at the playlist. I felt like I was listening to ac/dc, godsmack over and over again.

Even with weighted diaries, S&P won 25-54 outright.

And they freakin' STOLE the handle of "Radio Gawds".

Not arguing that. But W&J were at the top of the market TODAY. There may have been better before but those aren't out there now.

There are four million people in the Houston area and we can't have ONE DECENT ROCK STATION?!!! How many ******* latino stations do we need? There must be four or five now.

93.7 is mostly 60's and 70's rock, and 94.5 is mostly alternative.

I guess its time to go with XM or Cirrus or whatever its called.

Here's a ****ing newsflash to the imbeciles running the music business: Not all white people are country fans. Further, alot of hispanics like rock too. There are alot of folks who would like to listen to something other than country, hip hop or latino.
