From TexAgs Sponsor, RevelXP:

Back when you were a student at A&M, tailgating probably looked a little different than it does today.
Maybe it was a cooler full of drinks, a bag of chips, a few lawn chairs and whoever happened to show up. Or maybe you had a favorite spot where everybody gathered before heading into Kyle Field.

Nobody needed a fancy setup. It was about being with your friends, talking Aggie football and getting ready for the game.

So let's hear it… How did you tailgate as a student? Where did you gather, and what was always part of the tradition?

Tailgating has certainly come a long way since those student days! If you're looking to make your game-day experience a little more comfortable and a lot less work, take a look at what RevelXP has to offer.

There was no tailgating when I was a student. We went to the games early, sang the national anthem and state song and The Spirit (with the team) and then watched the Aggies beat the hell out of people on Kyle Field.

Next question?

We mostly had 1PM kickoffs when I was in school. Went to the cafeteria or maybe Northgate to eat before heading over to Kyle, if we woke up early enough.

The only students who tailgated outside of official university events were the frats way out West somewhere by the Brazos River.

*also had breakfast with the old folks at G Rollie a few times when I worked for the 12th Man Foundation.

I don't remember tailgating being much of a thing circa 1998-2003. A few corps outfits and frats doing frat stuff was about it.

Late 80s-early 90s here. Tailgating wasn't a thing back then.

1990-1994 (five seasons, and we didn't lose a home game).

We were usually the Raycom SWC Game of the Week (until '94). Were those a 1 PM kickoff? We did absolutely zero tailgating. Just tried to get through the hangover before heading over to Kyle.

Tailgating was virtually nonexistent until the university changed one rule; alcohol allowed on campus.

My maternal grandfather was Class of '25. He tailgated for decades at Kyle Field (last season was 1980). When he died, we found so many flasks. One looked like a radio. One looked like massive binoculars. That one was brilliant. I know they drank bourbon in the parking lot before the games. My sister used to sell peanut brittle to his friends, and then we'd listen to the game on the radio driving back to Beaumont. No TV broadcast to miss back then.

I was a little kid at the time (only 8 in 1980), but I remember the tailgaters being all old men. I don't remember there being any students out there. I don't even remember middle aged people.

And yes, letting it out in the open helped tremendously.

Also, my grandfather's group in college got their liquor from a guy in Navasota who would put it on the train. Not exactly sure how payment worked, but I think it's cool that he told my mother that.

Tailgating really wasn't much of a thing even when I was an undergrad. I remember my senior year, I lived in a really crappy house across Texas from campus (the chicken finger district, if you will). But the house had a kegerator. So on Friday afternoon, we'd have friends all chip in a few bucks and go get a $35 keg of Keystone Ice from the ratty Kroger nearby. On game day we would turn on ESPN College Gameday and people would just show up and start cranking beers. The invitation list was pretty loose -- you basically had to be somewhere in someone's social circle. Everyone would grab a roadie about 30-45 minutes before kickoff. After the game, we'd come back and kill whatever was left of the keg.

The only answer for my time at A&M is.

Ask your Mom.

Sleep a couple of hours from the night before. Eat a breakfast taco and an immediate hair of the dog remedy(s). Game on!

I've posted this several times before, but it's an OG tailgate picture from Spence Park, circa 1983.

There was a "beer bus" in front of Kyle in the late 90's early 2000's. It was Old Ags something or other and we paid some sort of dues to be able to drink draft beer from the bus. We thought it was the coolest thing ever.
Today, unfortunately, many Americans have good reason to fear that they will be victimized if they are unable to protect themselves. And today, no less than in 1791, the Second Amendment guarantees their right to do so. - Justice Samuel Alito 2022

Same years. If anyone did it, I wasn't aware of it

We tailgated once at spence in 2004, you just showed up that morning with a grill and coolers. It really started taking off in 03 04 timeframe, but more west of the tracks initially.

The closest thing I experienced to tailgating in the 80s was one of my buddies' parents setting up at one of the picnic tables in Spence Park to feed us doughnuts and orange juice after FTAB early morning practice at Kyle Field on Saturdays

I remember in the early 00s there was scant tailgating, and then the Ags traveled to Clemson (the game right after Hurricane Katrina) and saw how they did things there, and tailgating BLEW UP immediately after that.

Source: I was there and also am a Clemson alumni.

Was there the same time frame. We would start on Thursday night at Wings and mor , Friday night at Fajita Rita's with yell and then Saturday morning brunch pregame at Black Eyed Pea. Best Pregaming ever. I loathe tailgating now.
