I read there are some different systems with the recent strains.
How was it?
This was really awful the first 18 hours:
Given the normal virus life cycle, I probably picked it up either at church or at Sunday lunch (we dined out). Tuesday afternoon I had a runny nose and slight congestion. Overnight Tuesday into Wednesday was a nightmare: body aches, fever, cough, chest ache, near fainting episode when I got up for the bathroom, shortness of breath,---the usual suspects. Visited the local Doc in a Box (urgent care) on Wednesday and temp was still about 2 degrees above normal. What got me going was some Propel to replace the electrolytes I had sweated out. We only keep the non-sugar variety, so I highly recommend keeping emergency Gatorade on hand.
I got the Paxlovid prescription which is supposed to shorten the duration of the disease. Apparently the clinic has seen a lot of these cases in our area since school has been in session since late August, but I don't know about the specific vintage of this strain since Covid is remarkably adaptive.
I wear a mask at home to prevent virus passage to my wife. The mask, of course, is not to protect you: it is to prevent transmission of the virus to uninfected people. Ditto with hand sanitizer. I am so glad I married a woman who worked in medical research labs and taught in a medical school for much of her career.
