So true, I know I'm old but I don't trust a Freebirds whose staff isn't covered in tats.

Was such a great concept 25 years ago but they sold out way too soon. Even 15 years ago the food was still ok but since then they have been slowly giving up the ghost.

I can remember coming back from the 1990 football game at t.u.. Someone had slid a "Save the Bird Eat a Monster" sticker under my door at Law. Apparently the place was doing badly. As I had a meal plan, I'd never been. I finally went at some point in the spring of 1991 and got a monster for $4, IIRC. I seem to remember a series of Save the Bird Eat a Monster radio commercials that spring. Brilliant advertising "Keep us from going under!"

I remember this. One my favorite online Texags rants of all time. I don't recall if blue stars were a thing yet at that time, but if they were, I wore my finger out blue starring those rants. Freebirds changing their BBQ sauce and then changing it back (for the most part) was right up there with the New Coke disaster in my opinion.

The ones in college station are still a lot better than the ones in Houston.

No one in the entire greater Houston area can roll a bird or monster to save their life, sad really.

+ for Cabo Bobs. I never considered it the same kind of restaurant as Freebirds but I suppose it is (go through the line instructing them how to make your order). Same process but they have fish along with pork, beef, and chicken.

Amazing fish tacos. I always get the #2 Deluxe Fish Tacos.

IIRC, when they started, the beef was a John Soules product. Then they tried to cut costs and starting marinating it with their own recipe. Thats when the quality took a dive.

The freebirds near me changed their cheese a few years ago and it is disgusting. I am not sure if all of them went that way but they no longer have the mixed cheese.

My local Freebirds lost the sauce dispensers during Covid and they never came back. They have also replaced almost every fresh option that was formerly prepared in-house with pre-packaged slop from a warehouse.

Freebirds went down hill once they expanded beyond the Northgate location.

Sometimes you need a good cleanse. Nothing queues up a good 5 + couric movement than running a monster through the system.

Seriously though, I stopped eating there 10 + years ago, when they got rid of all the foil artwork.

Went back a couple of yrs ago with my kids, and even they were not impressed. Even the 8 yr old boy who would snort and/or mainline queso of any variety given the opportunity.

I still go to Freebirds. It definitely is nowhere near what it was in the 90s at NG, but it's convenient on the way home from work when I need to pick up something for the family. I honestly don't understand how my location is still open because more often than not I am the only one in there. It's amazing to think back and when the Texas Ave location opened (97?)... that place was a zoo and they always had what seemed like 20+ people working.

I think it's better than Chipotle and they're at least generous with the servings...maybe because at this point the employees know me and that I tip some. I do miss the old BBQ sauce, stuff was like crack and I would take shots of it...but that version went away 20+ years ago.

The last time we went to the Frisco location on Main St we swore would be our last.

As normal zero patrons at tables, but surprisingly there were 3 or 4 couples in line. The HS kids working there were very friendly.

The food quickly reminded us why we'd started going no more than once or twice a year when we'd visit purely for the convenience. Never again.

It's just bad.

I still go to the one by my office. It's certainly not the same, but the sauce dispensers have been gone for YEARS.

The bigger tragedy is that they stopped putting Jalapenos in their pico. That's just like...tomato salad.
