I-35 in Dallas last night. Thankfully, my wife looked at the traffic on her phone before leaving work and came hone a different way.

Funny thing is the car that probably caused this calmly drove home and is, to this hour, unaware of the carnage he/she caused by their stupidity.

This + all the bridges we have in Charleston = the reason I use Waze even if I know how to get there.

My FIL said this to his mom when she bragged that she had never had an accident:

"It's not how many you've been in, it's how many you've caused"

People still use Waze? I assumed all their functionality would have been rolled into Google Maps when Google bought them over a decade ago. Google alerts you of traffic problems and wrecks I'm pretty sure.

Not sure if google maps puts police on the map, but that's what got me on Waze and kept me there.

I like Google Maps when I don't know where I'm going, like traveling.

I like Waze better if I know where I'm going and I want the quickest route avoiding traffic.

That is amazing, since I-30 isn't even in Colorado.

Yes, it does.

It does now - it used not to. Google now does everything Waze does, so I find myself using it more and more.

Dang it. That's what I get for looking at news headlines on FB.

My wife still uses it and it drives me nuts. My in laws too.

I've always thought it was a really clunky app. I'd always try to do something on the map and it would spaz out.

Maybe I just never got the hang of it.

Always thought Google Maps is much cleaner

On a related note, Apple Maps, which has always been the butt of all map jokes, has excellent satellite images of many bay systems. I've used it to get dialed in on structure I'm trying to fish.

Headed to Ft Worth the other day and the Ford maps rerouted us. It routed us past the standstill traffic on I-35W right to the place where there was no traffic delay on I35 - because it was blocked by the police and closed. We had to turn around and back track. Turned on Waze and it showed the road was closed and wouldn't have sent us there. Rest of the trip we kept Waze and Ford (think it uses Google maps) open and compared the two before choosing our route.

Maps is cleaner, but the Waze routing algorithm is more aggressive and can save more time. Maps tried to balance stuff like fuel economy and staying on major roads, but Waze has no problem routing you through a neighborhood to save 2 minutes.

I like Waze because

1) it still gives me a heads up of reported police ahead and whether they are hidden or not
2) I can see other Wazers
3) My avatar is the station wagon from National Lampoon's Vacation

You used to be able to interact with other Wazers, too, but I don't think you can do that anymore after the app stopped allowing me to type in my destination while moving/driving.

I've not futzed around with Google Maps enough to know if any of the three items listed above are available, but I am willing to be educated.
