FTAB Baritone Replacement Campaign

To those who watch the FTAB closely, the baritones the band marches with appear to be antiques. There is presently a campaign ongoing to pay the approximately $100,000 it will take to replace them.

Consider throwing a few extra bucks you may have to this campaign. See details from Phil below:

-----------------------------------------------------------

Howdy Ags,

The FTAB routinely replaces a few horns and woodwinds from various instrument sections on a yearly basis. However, this year they have 30 baritones that are quite old and well beyond their useful life. Further repair is both expensive and untenable due to the age and condition of the instruments. The cost for replacement is approximately $100,000…. or about $3300 each.

Due to the large scope of this need, the directors approached the TABA in late December asking for financial assistance, with the goal to have the baritones available and ready for use at the beginning of the upcoming 2026 fall football season. The TABA officers and board members convened on January 9, and voted to contribute $25,000 from our general fund for the new baritones. We have also had an extremely generous donation from another former bandsman that will go directly towards this replacement campaign.

Earlier this month, Dr. Tim Rhea had two different makers of baritones ship sample instruments for the band to try out. After the directors evaluated them, and a few of the baritone players tested them, the decision was made to order 30 baritones this month.

If you would like to make a one time contribution and have 100% of your gift go to this baritone replacement campaign, we now have it set up at member.tabaonline.com to do exactly that. It's simple, click on the link, go to the "Membership & Gifts" header, and click on "Special Purpose Gift". Type in your email address and follow the instructions from there. You do not have to be an active TABA member to make this one time donation.

If you prefer to make a donation by written check, please include a note stating it is for the "Baritone Replacement Campaign". Then mail to:

Texas Aggie Band Association
1507 S. College Ave.
Bryan, TX 77801-1214

Please consider getting behind and supporting this organization that means so much to so many! The more financial assistance we can provide for the replacement of this large number of baritones, the more the band can utilize what they have budgeted towards the normal yearly replacement and repair, of all the different instruments, throughout the band.

Thank you. And Gig'em!

Agreed.

Seems like this is something the school should be paying for. I mean they should probably have a regular budget line item for something like instrument replacement for the band.

Don't think I've ever heard a BQ call themselves an " Aggie Bandsman." I've never used that phrase.

I will donate under the condition that FTAB plays the theme from Hogans Heros at least once each season. It's a march, has a great drum cadence, and great brass melody.

At first glance, I thought $100k was too high. But one baritone runs $3,200 at Sweetwater (online music store). That adds up to about 30 instruments, of which one is probably practice, and one is performance/travel for 15 or so baritone players.

Personally, I love the Fighting Texas Aggie Band, but I'll admit that every now and then I have a secret wish to see them do something radically different. Play a showtune with the senior trumpet guys dancing, or do an 80s rock anthem like "We're not Gonna Take it".

Do a medley of 1970s and 1980s TV theme songs. Transition from Sanford & Son to Simon & Simon.
