This was about 25 years ago, and I was in my 20s and single, and thus had not been exposed to any baby name silliness.

My high school was about as white bread as it gets, and I don't recall anyone having strangely spelled names. The closest we had to exotic were the two literal Vietnamese refugee brothers, Minh and Sinh (aka Noel, because he was born on Christmas.)

Over the years:
My sister went thru school with a guy named Richard Head. Of course, everyone called him Dick.
My mom worked with a guy named Dick Ball.
My dad worked with a girl named Mary Christmas.
Knew a couple of girls named Penny Lane & Robin Hood
Have a niece named Noelle. Her name is an oxymoron when you think about it.

Dated a gal in High School whose younger brother was named Whizzer. Not a nickname-actual first name. We live in Colorado, and his dad was older, and had known Byron 'Whizzer' White, Supreme court justice, and player at the University of Colorado. Kid embraced it and made it work.

He was very insistent on using his full, proper first name. "Michael will be fine, thanks."

Not from Oklahoma or Lake Jackson that I knew of. Scout camp in question (Carl F. Wente Scout Reservation) is in northern California. A few miles outside of Willits, the final resting place of Seabiscuit.
