Lifestyle creep is real. That's all I'll say. Thought I was better than it but im not.

Amen.

I grew up with a family of 5 in a 1600sqft house and slept in a trundle bed until I was about 14 yrs old. Worked every summer at minimum wage.

Would never imagine I have the lifestyle I do now. However, it's good to know that if I had to, turkey sandwiches and VHS tapes with family vacations to camp could do.

Better than that? That an interesting way to put it. I wake up everyday grateful for what I have. I was mowing the lawn as a kid and went in the house to get water. I looked out the kitchen window and watched as two thieves threw it in the back of a truck. I spent the rest of the summer mowing our yard and the neighbors so I could borrow their mower. My grandad bought me a bike and a week or two later it walked off my buddy's porch. It shows up at school a few days later with a rattle can pain job. The principle called the kids mom and she insisted she bought it new.

I can leave my garage open and go on a vacation in my current neighborhood. I'd probably get a call from a neighbor letting me know, but nothing would be missing. This lifestyle didn't creep in. I busted my ass to get here as fast as I could and I'm a better person for it.

Your theft stories aren't really relevant to the conversation.

I don't miss 1040 Angela Court back in Nevada as a little kid, but I wouldn't call it lifestyle creep to get out of that.

So at what point does it transition into "creep". You can have a nice home, but not too nice....nice reliable car, but not a newer luxury car....you can wear a Tag, but not a Rolex... It's all arbitrary. I went from a pop-up to a camper to a condo to a bay house. Where did I cross the line according to you?

I think getting into a safe middle class neighborhood for your kids to grow up in should be everyone's goal. Don't think that's creep. Once you are regular old middle class and your salary starts to grow is why the typical term lifestyle creep starts to apply.

If I had to judge... which I don't but I will because I also am ridiculed on this thread...

I would say... from camper to condo. Mostly because I'm right there at the moment also, lol.

Mining kid actually. My dad was a mining engineer and he worked at the Rawhide gold mine about 55 miles from Fallon. I was pretty young, we moved back to Wyoming when I was 7 years old, but I knew some Navy kids there.

What is six figures? If it's like $120k, then that was $75k like 10 years ago and who cares. That's not much at all these days.

It's dumb this term sticks around. It originated to refer to the top 1/2%

To have a nice home in an upper class neighborhood with a single income, savings, play money, etc. you need at least 350K in today's world. Nobody making that kind of money uses the term 6-figure so anyone who does is likely just north of 100 and basically working to barely get by

no you don't

From what I've learned from my Mormon workers, you can live off a $200k total salary package (base + target bonus + 401k match + hsa match) and support 6 kids with a SAHM with a pretty comfy middle class life. Not extravagant, but not uncomfortable by any means. The Mormon support network is very valuable though… extremely strong community that others have to pay lots of money for (meal trains, home school co-ops instead of private school, etc).

$350k to live "comfortably"? That's over $29,000/mo gross. That represents 2%-4% of earners in America.

I don't consider myself rich, but certainly blessed enough to live pretty comfortably. Maybe I have low standards but I don't want for much. I make 6 figures but less than $350k and do just fine supporting 2 kids and a household. And that's with 25% of my NET income going entirely to their mom for "child support" that pays for her brand new Lincoln. Sock away a little each month. Max out my 401k and Roth. Able to take 2-3 nice trips a year, plus weekend trips away. I probably eat out more than I should. I also have a gf and she's expensive, lol.

What are you people pissing your money away on?

I just got to my condo in Saint Martin for the week.

Spent last week in Sint Maarten.

Yeah...same island, but different countries...

We go to the Caribbean for 2 weeks every Christmas vacation...

I agree with the lifestyle creep for sure. When we first got married, we were doing fine. But I made it my mission to not spend more than $200/month on food/household stuff. I was obsessed with couponing. It was a game back then to me.

Somewhere along the way, that stopped. We were still cautious of what we spent, but not when I did the couponing.

Now (18 years later) I spend an absurd amount of money on food. I eat out 1-3 meals a day. And yes I need to cut back, more for my waistline and but would help the pocketbook. We vacation a lot. Travel softball. But I know we are very blessed to be able to do so.

Where I haven't let the creep in is with the house/cars. We live in a nice house that we bought 16 years ago. Would have loved a bigger house before but just couldn't justify it and now am glad we didn't. I drive a Nissan Rogue. Hubs drives a nice truck. Always wanted a BMW but now my focus is retirement. So that's $40k+ more to go towards retirement whether it's accounts or in rent houses we buy. I stopped by Louis Vuitton's years ago (although I really want their luggage with link accents).
