FWIW, I believe gender is defined by chromosomes. If you have XX, you're female, XY you're male, and XXY (this does happen) it's complicated.

I kind of separate physical sex from social sex. Physical sex is defined by one's chromosomes and under current science is immutable, cosmetic surgeries not withstanding.

Social sex is how one presents oneself. To dabo man's point if Amy wants to be Dale or Dale wants to be Amy, I don't really care and will generally honor that from a social standpoint.

Where it gets tricky is when issues of physical sex and social sex create conflict. For example, I don't think it's a good idea for a physical man/social woman to compete in most sports against physical women; on average, there's too much of a strength imbalance. Likewise, I'm incredibly leery of housing physical men in a women's penitentiary, regardless of whether they are socially women or not.
