Some speculation at this point as details haven't been released fully but this sleezeball of a guy just lost the lawsuit forcing him to sell the festival. Have little doubt what happened here.

Edit for background info.
There is a whole HBO documentary about him for the sleezeball aspect. As for the lawsuit see below. Tldr, he loved to act like he would sell, cause large bills for buyers to be rung up and then back out right at end. Judge shut that down and forced it to be sold.

I know nothing about the back story and the linked article did nothing to educate me.

"King" George has been offering the place for years, getting qualified buyers, then backing out at the last minute. It finally all caught up to him and the sale was forced to conclude.
A lot of other shenanigans probably caught up with him too.

Here's a better write up https://www.khou.com/article/news/local/texas/texas-renaissance-festival-founder-found-dead-george-coulam/285-3c9c0178-c80a-4a6b-899a-fb8f0954146b

All local fox sites should be shut down with their horrible writing style, it's so terrible. Maybe they only use AI now

Anyway, back to King George. Just lost his court case after he had backed out of a deal to sell his property AND had lost as mayor for the first time in like 40 years.

If any of yall dont know King George, I highly recommend watching https://www.hbo.com/ren-faire

Living in Dallas I always assumed the Renaissance Festival in Waxahachie was the biggest, guess the one related to this King George guy was bigger?

I know almost nothing about what happened, but I hope whoever buys it returns some decency to the fair. Kick the furries and "cosplayers" out.

Thanks for the background I had not heard the basis for the law suit
Must have been some pretty egregious circumstances to get sued for that much and lose

Over furries? Yes, 100%.

I don't care if you dress up if you're actually dressing up to the time period or the mythology. Everything else should be kicked out.

They could get it dialed in some, but for the most part, the cosplayers dress appropriate. You aren't suggesting banning people playing dress up because of a few bad apples?

There is definitely a circuit of the Renaissance fairs. I saw the same acts at the NC fair that I saw years ago at the TX fair. I'm sure they pretty much follow the same schedule every year going to fairs around the country.

Without looking into specifics, depending on how the property is owned, this may lead to a whole bunch more delays and expenses in dealing with the guy's estate before a sale can be completed.

So if the medical examiner determines King George was murdered, will the cause of death be listed as regicide?

Made the mistake of taking the kids to Sherwood Forrest Faire after hearing it was smaller. Place looked like not much more than an excuse for every fruitcake in Austin to out weird each other. Furys, Halloween costumes, scary clowns, super Mario brothers, etc.

Waxahachie is pretty much a mall parking lot carnival compared to Texas Ren Fest

This one was in Plantersville NW of Houston between there and College Station. It was badass back in the day. I don't know what it's like now but back in the early 90s there weren't as many families that went so it was more adult oriented. I knew nothing about it until one day a few of the RenFair people showed up Brazos Brewing Company in College Station and were promoting it.

There was a midget with them that was rolling around the restaurant and acting like an untamed animal weirdo. Funny as hell.

We started going and went for several years but over time more and more people found about it and it started getting more crowded and more kids so they tamed it down a little bit.

Some do

There's local performers and workers that return most years

And there's travelers
