So, yeah, I'm old. Had the halftime show on as background noise while I was cleaning the grill after cooking. Somebody who knows better, tell me: was that considered good?

This isn't even close. Go look at a list of past performers. Dr Dre and Snoop are the only rappers to headline.

They are probably complaining because there hasn't been any Country music in a while, considering in 59 years of the super bowl only two times have they had country artists (2003 - Shania, and 1994 - Clint Black, Tanya Tucker, Travis Tritt, and the Judds). Also do in part because the NFL picks performers that a majority of the fan base somewhat like and country isn't generally the preferred genre of the majority of NFL fans.

I actually like the halftime shows that are more small scale… I get that it's billed as the biggest concert of the year and all that but it usually ends up being style over substance.

I also like that they had a performer that can pump the players/crowd up, not just appeal to female viewers for ratings. Give me a small Kendrick show over a big Shakira/JLo show any day.

That all said, the Netflix halftime show in Houston was miles better for what they were aiming for.
