So much of my life is visible online and I am now very cautious about personal info I share. Making a big exception today.

https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/new-braunfels-tx/lorelei-hathcoat-12235441

I found out one of my dear friends passed away from late stage colon cancer this past Tuesday. Lorelei was a true bright spot at my time at A&M. We originally met through Traditions Council and were instant friends. I know it's cliche, but she really could light up a room. In my life I have met few people that were as genuine, caring, and wonderful as Lorelei. She was the one that introduced me to KANM Student Radio. Later with her help and encouragement, I was able to get my own show. Even though my show was from 12am-2am Sunday night/Monday morning she would still send me messages and call in live requests.

Looking back at that time, I was lost deep in depression (this was just before I got kicked out of A&M for grades). That radio show was the one bright spot in my life and I don't know if I would still be here today if not for it and her friendship. When I did get kicked out, she was quick to comfort me and let me know it wasn't the end of my journey at A&M. She was confident I would get my grades up, come back, and graduate (she was right). I am eternally grateful for her friendship and light that she brought into my life. There's a chance some people on here may have known Lorelei which is partly why I wanted to make this post.

Here.

(this is my favorite pic of us. When she first invited me to be a guest on her show)

**** Cancer.

They really need to start amending the colon cancer screenings. It needs to be happening at 30 instead of 40. My wife had some major polyps found last year at age 34. There was another guy on here that had some at 32. I've seen several patients and others get diagnosed in their 30s.

I am very sorry for your loss. And yes things need to change. I have colon cancer in my family and colon problems and they still wouldn't approve me for a screening at 44.

I can't speak to it. I work in cardiology (not a doc) for a preventative medicine clinic. So I end up reading through a lot of general medical histories for patients

Not a doc, but the advice I got from a trusted friend in the oncology world is to do the colonoscopy your first time as it can detect things the other option may not. Take that for what it's worth.

Same here. Runs in my family and wouldn't approve me either. They are expensive if insurance won't cover.

Yep they will pay an ER bill for a problem but not $1200 for something that could save our lives

Not a doc, but a 50 year old who has done research and been probed. Cologuard basically identifies bleeding. As a result, it's pretty good at identifying something that has already progressed to being actual cancer. It's not very good at detecting precancerous polyps, which that is when you want to nip this stuff. So my advice would be get the real deal

Mid 30s here. This has prompted me to call insurance and see if they'll cover it. Wish they'd move the date up, I keep reading about these young occurrences more frequently.

I had a bunch of health issues in my late 20s early 30s. As part of the barrage of testing I had a colonoscopy. Even at that age they found and removed several polyps. I wasn't related to my issues at the time but I'm damn lucky the test was done so young. Especially if you have family history don't wait until 45 or even 40.

I'll speak to it.

Cologuard isn't going to find polyps that later could turn into tumors. It has some positive attributes, but if it alerts to any problem, you're still getting referred for a colonoscopy to see what it flagged.

You get what you pay for.

The scope can also allow the doc to remove polyps or take samples of a tumor or see other issues like diverticulitis.

Yeah, the prep isn't fun. Yeah, you have to adjust your diet for a few days prior. But then you take a glorious nap while they do the procedure, wake up, and if they didn't find an urgent problem and ship you off in an ambulance, you pick up some food on the way home, eat, and chill out the rest of the day.

I've had seven of them. It's not a big deal.

Thanks for sharing the link to her funeral home site. I went thru all of it. It brings me to tears when someone loses their battle. Especially a young person.

I've got a distant relative battling right now. She's 41. It's not going well.

Lorelei looks like a beautiful person that had a great life and was a friend to many. I'm sorry for your loss and am so sad for her boys and husband and siblings and parents.

Get the pill form of the prep. Not bad at all. And the procedure itself is definitely a nice nap nothingburger followed by a meal that is gonna taste great.

Please, y'all, get a colonoscopy if you haven't had one. It's much easier (and less expensive) to go through a colonoscopy than colon cancer (surgery, maybe wearing a bag, chemo, etc).

Well said.

Insurance companies need to weigh the $1200-ish for a scope vs the $300k/yr it takes to treat someone.

Different experience. Have a friend now recovering in the hospital from having approx 8" of colon removed, discovered initially by doing the Cologuard. Then went in for the colonoscopy, and pinpointed what was necessary to remove and biopsy.
Not telling anyone on here what to do, and if indeed you have this type of history in your family, by all means get that colonoscopy.
Very sorry to hear the loss of such a beam of light.
God speed everyone.
