I just got back from the visitation and the deceased person's ashes were at the entrance to the room in a clear jar.
We were taking a group picture and someone told us that two of us should be on one side and two on the other. I turned around and realized that the main object was this clear jar of a relative that had been cremated. It was a little bit awkward. Is having the remains in a clear jar a new trend?

In 5 years in the biz, I never once saw a transparent container for cremains.

That's effed up lol. No one wants to see a pile of crushed bone. Don't waste money on an urn either. They sell cardboard canisters that facilitate spreading the ashes. Go spread them someplace they enjoyed, where you could also go visit to remember them and what they loved

I just don't think that, even though you make a good point, that flushing them down the toilet is appropriate. Sure that was their quiet place for me time but still!

After A&M played Appalachian State University all that remained were the cremains.

I used to be. Six Feet Under was a great show. The theme was my ringtone for a while.

Is getting cremated before the visitation/funeral a norm? My dad passed two years ago and was cremated. However, it was not after the visitation and funeral.

So Ryan,
I know they crush all the big stuff that doesn't get burnt up. But what are we typicallly talking about here? Mostly ash and maybe a partial femur and a few teeth? Pretty much a full skeleton?

Another question... what happens to "appliances?" Fake knees, gold teeth, etc. Recycled? Thrown away? buried respectfully?

There usually aren't a lot of bone fragments bigger than an inch or so. There certainly isn't a discernible skeleton. Appliances that cannot be removed and are not consumed during the cremation are removed from the cremains. In incendiary (traditional) cremation, those appliances are typically too damaged and are discarded. In alkaline ("water") cremation, some appliances are unaffected and recycled.

Depends on what the family wants. It can go either way, but most families want the urn present for the service.

I've seen, somewhere, pics that people took at funerals, of the deceased. Gross, IMO. Not really the way that I'd want to be remembered or the way I want to remember someone.

Photos of the deceased used to be a very common practice. Families would pose their dead loved one for pictures, especially when it was a deceased child.

Wow. How long does it take?

I once was in the recycling business. We would get body parts from the local crematorium. I was apalled until they talked reason to me. No one wants Gamgam's artificial knee.

Now my sister... she has a mint of titanium in her body. She has promise me the part when she is cremated.

All true.

An Army buddy of mine want to be cremated. He wants his friends to get a bottle of Wild Turkey (his fav) and sit around, drink, and tell stories. When the bottle is empty, pour his ashes into it and bury that.
When the truth comes out, do not ask me how I knew.
Ask yourself why you did not.

A friend of mine was getting into their are after work (he teaches high school) last year and noticed a broken wooden box of cremains next to their car door. Definitely freaked him out. I told him it was a warning from a student he had failed.

Cremation usually takes a couple of hours, depending on the size of the individual (i.e. larger bones, not fatness).

This. My wife has directions to remove my cremated remains to west Texas and the Hill Country. Somewhere between Llano and Fredericksburg:Kerrville or in Eastland County around Lake Leon. No strong south winds, though. I don't want to go any further north.

I did scout out the area around Tyler where my family first moved in the 1850s from Alabama and Mississippi but after looking around, the thought came to mind:

I think I want my ashes dumped into the AC system of the main IRS building. I figure I've paid enough to earn the right to haunt them forever.

If I decide I want my corpse cremated, I am going to ask for my ashes to be streaked with red, white, and blue colored sand.

Heck, NW80 from the OB had his cremains turned into red, white and blue shotgun shells. Friends and family lined up with 12 gauges and shot him into Bolivian.

Japan does the cremation as part of the funeral. Do the funeral ceremony, hop in the shuttle van to the crematorium, do some more prayers as the body goes into the cremation room, get back in the shuttle to go eat lunch, and then go back to the crematorium when the body is finished. The family all use what are basically giant chopsticks to put the remains into the urn - they don't grind them up to a powder like they do in the US, so there are still discernible bones.
