Selling a sofa and chair on Marketplace. Immediately someone jumps on it via Messenger for exactly what I'm asking. They want my number to text rather than messenger and then want Zelle or Venmo to pay because her card isn't working.

I was selling some furniture a few months back and had stated CASH ONLY, no zelle or venmo, and got a response from someone asking if they could have my number to text me a six digit code to verify that I was an actual person.

Yeah, I declined to do that. I ended up selling the stuff the next day to a person who showed up with a trailer to haul the stuff off and and paid asking price in cash.

Maybe I should have asked for more?

Exactly what happened! I got another message from someone whose name was in Arabic.

It will eventually morph into them sending you too much money and asking you to send the difference back. Then you'll discover they never sent you anything.

I had a scammer like this once who kept sending me pics (faked) which showed he'd paid me but the app never showed any $ received. I just ignored him.

I stopped selling stuff on Marketplace but back when I did a couple years ago, it seemed like I got about 5-6 scam offers for every legit one.

If you just tell them cash only, in person pick up, most of them go away. Just keep repeating it for the few that persist and want your phone number. Don't give it to any of them.

One guy offered me pot in exchange for a mirror. I don't know if that one was legit or not, but I had a good laugh.

You should never use Zelle with people you don't know. It doesn't have the same protections that other payment providers have.

I tried a resell website and I listed something and instantly got a shipping label from a Bot saying my transaction had been approved and to send the items immediately or my card would be charged.

AI is really getting good at scams
