People with bad brakes and bald tires can't afford insurance and inspections anyways. I saw a car with an 03/20 sticker on the window in an HEB parking lot this morning.

So the Japanese car mod scene is gonna take off again? Those modded cars could not pass emissions so couldn't go all out.

At least we'll be able to pocket that $7.50 to fight inflation. Oh wait.

The annual $7.50 safety inspection fee has been replaced with the Inspection Program Replacement Fee, which is added to the vehicle registration fee. GD morons.

Happy to have it tacked on so I don't have to waste my time driving to some ****ty tire and lube place just so they can waste their time honking my car's horn and stepping on the brake pedal.

If you live in a sanctuary county you'll still be required to have emissions testing unless you're an undocumented immigrant.

I guess 39 states in the US have nothing but dangerous junkers on the roads.

oh please. I know of at least 3 inspection shops which the inspection is "hey, stop by the shop for your inspection. I've already got the paperwork filled out and ready to go for you".

Mrs Mathguy's truck had a 12/24 sticker and she got her registration and "inspection" done Friday. That was just about how it went. She went to the shop, they pulled it straight in the bay and immediately called her name to get the truck. They were just doing the paperwork. No inspection at all.

So will we still have to affix a sticker that will eventually expire?

I live in WA now after living for years in VA where at least when I lived there had emission and safety checks and I must say I miss it immensely. So many missing head, tail, brake, blinker lights, misaligned lights, unsafe junkers everywhere and the bad apples spewing blue burning oil across the highways. It is just horrible.

Why is the inspection fee now going to the state for doing nothing?

Because no taxing authority EVER gives up a tax once they start to collect it.

Was that not just the free for the service performed at the inspection location?

I tried to tie this into the climate change party, but can't do it.

There are 11 red counties that still require emissions testing - Brazoria, Collin, Ellis, Galveston, Johnson, Kaufman, Montgomery, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant & Williamson.

There are 5 blue counties that still require emissions testing - Dallas, El Paso, Fort Bend, Harris & Travis.

Your first list is ten big city-adjacent counties and one that refuses to admit that it is a big city county.

Your second list is four major city counties and one who's voters don't realize they are in a different county than a major city.

I have driven from Portland, OR to Seattle, WA once a month for the past 3 years. Usually spend 2-3 days driving all over both states. There are definitely more junky rust buckets on the road in the PNW but the amount of paper plated Altimas which have allegedly been inspected in Texas is probably 10x what I see in the PNW. I can't recall a single trip where I thought "man I feel much safer in Texas traffic than these states." Give me rusty old beaters all day over uninsured Nissans with paper tags.

The counties that still have emissions testing are most likely required to do them by EPA to meet their air quality requirements

Glad the inspections went away. Big waste of time. The Bigger problem is the paper plate fiasco (and no insurance) in the Houston area & others. These guys weren't getting inspected anyways....

resources would better benefit the public by changing the paper plate regs, and pulling over & inspecting insurances / driver licenses of the obviously forged paper plate people.

Still 25% on windows that are immediately right/left of the driver in Texas unless you have some new information.

Got my last one a few days before the new year. Brand new wipers on the car, but got the obligatory "you need new wipers and I can put those on for you right now". I'm sure they were the solid gold ones.
