Unfortunately, a really, really rare malignant tumor. 17 years old. MD Anderson only has had one of its type in a kid in the sinuses.
Sometimes this job just sucks ass.

Dang. For M.D. to have only seen one case - that is rare.

Curable?

Yep. Lots of collaboration on this case. Tumor Board meeting this week to discuss. Thankfully his PET CT shows it's not spread anywhere else. I think I lost a week of my own life after pathologist called me with results and I called his parents.

The tumor board. I am familiar! Saw them kick a case to the liver board when they couldn't come to a consensus on a treatment plan.

Is there a sinus board or tumors of the head but not brain if they can't reach an agreement on the plan beyond surgery?

We have a separate Head and Neck Tumor Board for adults but this is a kid, and it's not a surgical disease. It's a rare variant of a lymphoma. It'll be chemotherapy plus or minus radiation therapy.

Dammit. Never heard of lymphoma there. Guess that is why it is rare in a youth. Probably not too common for an adult either.

Can they radiate and not affect vision and brain and other important parts?

They can do things to limit the effects of radiation beyond the target tissue. Hopefully radiation won't be needed. TBD

I've never heard of cancer in that area.
