Yes, I know it stands for "Independent School District", but independent from what? The municipal government?

It means "Indepedent". As in, independent of thought or rationale. Independent of accountability. Independent of common sense.

Also see 1.) 'Hillbillys raising Hillbillys' and 2.)'Because I live here, I have the expertise to run the school here'.

School districts are independent local government districts with the ability to levy taxes.

When Maribeau Lamar set up the Texas Public School System, each county when it was formed, would establish a free public school for the children of that county. This would be supervised by a County Superintendent.

An Independent School District would be one that would serve a specific area, like a town or city.

A Unified District would be where two separate districts would be united, generally crossing county lines.

A Consolidated District would be where several schools within a county school district would be consolidated into a single school district. In the case of A&M Consolidated, it would have been the school at A&M, the school in College Station, Wellborne and so on. (lower Brazos County)

The school district in College Station is College Station ISD - so what exactly is consolidated, just the high school?

What happens when the city builds its second high school (which is in the works)? It's gonna be kinda dumb to have a consolidated high school and another high school in the same district. Can they change the name?
