I know how to play chess and have played for many decades (without any training). Purely recreational. I want to get better. How do I do that online? Looking for free sources.

There are free options on Chess.com with some quality bots.

Gotham Chess on YouTube is a good place to start for tutorials and game breakdowns.

I started learning how to play chess a few months ago and have gotten a lot better but still a long way to go.

Best to do so at knight if you want to meet the real kings of the board.

Only if checks are accepted

My kiddo has gotten pretty good playing against the bots on the chess.com app. She also watches analysis and does the tutorials (nerd alert). We use a paid version of the app, but I think they have a lot of that available on the free version too.

this guy does awesome analysis of high level/championship games. He shows hypothetical lines, why something does or doesn't work..

Every video has a 'pause the video' moment to allow you figure out the next move to win, even if it wasn't actually played.

Make sure you know what an en passant capture is.

I'm tired of explaining that one to people only for them to accuse me of making up rules.

Another one, but not as bad is under-promotion.

Chess king tactics software is pretty good. They have app versions so you can practice on the go. I still suck at chess but being able to quickly identify forks helped my game a lot.

If movies have thought me anything, I suggest finding an autistic person or an old, kind, black man to teach you.

Do they have tutorials at different levels? I am not looking for paid services. I know all the moves, I just want to get better.
