My youngest lives in San Antonio and will be shopping for an engagement ring in the next few months. He is not limited to SA as he would be willing to travel to CSTAT, or Houston if he can find a good value.
Any recommendations for him?

Send him to a pawnshop and get a $10K ring... for that $3K to $5K.

Retail diamonds? Ridiculous. DeBeers? Marketing geniuses.

Even I turned from the retail Rolex "line", and bought second hand. Watch now is worth 4X what I paid 20 years ago.

I have a contact with one of the main jewelry dealers (in Houston) who provides diamonds and rings to the retail jewelry stores. My engagement ring he made for my now wife was custom designed by them at about $1K less than it would have been elsewhere.

If you're interested let me know. You have to have a reference and have to setup an appointment to get into that Fort Knox of a building that houses the Houston area jewelry dealers.

Don't know about the budget, but Americus Diamond in San Antonio is great. That's where my husband got my engagement and wedding rings.

Awww is he still in business? I'm so glad!

I'd always heard using Blue Nile would save money since they were not brick and mortar. But that was 15 years ago and I'm pretty sure I saw their store in Northpark the other day.

His business is doing quite well! He's still very involved in the community (he's a county commissioner), and he's very involved in church. He's a pretty great guy.

Yep! I visited with him in January - he resized my wedding set and soldered it back together. He made my wedding band many years ago to match my engagement ring.

Awww I'm so glad to hear!

I've inherited a bunch of pieces from family that are BUTT ugly. I've been thinking about taking the stones out and making pieces that I'd actually wear but wasn't sure what jeweler to go to for such a thing. Maybe I'll reach out soon.

OP, have your son go to the place in Rosenberg. Can't recall the name off the top of my head but it's been there for decades and for a diamond and jewelry business to stay open for decades in a place like Rosenberg, they have been doing something right.

My brother-in-law looked at both real and moissanite side by side. Couldn't tell the difference with the naked eye. Moissanite actually looked better.

And Chuck with Fifth C redid the diamond in a new setting with sapphires that I gave to my wife for our 40th anniversary a few years ago. He does great work!

Chuck resized my wife's ring a couple of years back after creating a truly unique set nearly 15 years ago.

We walked in there, and it was like meeting up with an old friend. Our kids were with us too, and it was a pretty cool moment for all of us sharing how he helped me create a ring for Mommy a long time ago.

He's just good people. Can't go wrong!
