I am tired of that Caveman guy. He was not funny in 2005 or whatever. They even had a show for him which failed. STOP.

How did it work? Advertising works only when you PAY them money to buy a service.
Merely talking about it means nothing.

this reminds me, I've been meaning to shop around for new insurance since my company raised their rates again.
Let me think of a few companies to get a quote from.

Ooohh.. I can think of one.

Or maybe you repel your viewers so much with the caveman theme that they call up AllState instead.

Can cut both ways.

Do you remember those Quiznos ads with the roadkill creatures? Sales tanked. I am a Quiznos fan and I was repulsed. The ones in my area closed down.

Ugh.... look at those disgusting teeth. Whose bright idea was this??

I remember those commercials when I was in College Station. I had never eaten at Quiznos before and after seeing the commercials, I refused to give them a try.

Generating negative opinions about the company is not what they are paying their ad agency for. Same phenomenon as the loser loan guy on the old Ditech commercials. He was extremely unlikeable and came to be associated with the Ditech name due to their constant use of him in commercials. It was not a net positive, despite them spending tons of money running the ads.

Yeah, I don't believe they bothered to explain that. I guess they just expect everyone to remember or just know about their campaign from 20 years ago

I quoted someone that said 'talking about it means nothing.'
Yet here both of us are thinking of a company, proving that talking about it does in fact do something.

Not sure what you are trying to say.

Their goal for advertising is to put their name out there in a way that makes me consider going to them when I decide to shop around for insurance. Their advertising instead makes me not like their company enough to decide that I would never consider purchasing insurance from them and on top of that that I would talk to others about how much I dislike their ads. So yes, we are both here thinking of and talking about the company, but the end effect of the ad is that they are turning customers off and making some portion of them less likely to consider Geico for insurance. That is an advertising failure and they should fire their ad agency for it.

It has nothing to do with thinking everybody has my same opinion. You appear to be making the claim that any discussion of Geico that results from their ad is a positive for the company and means the ad is effective. I am just pointing out that there are situations like this where just having people remember the name of the company in response to an ad is not always a positive for the company if some number of them remember the name with a negative association attached that makes them less likely to buy their products.

ETA: The fact that the OP has 25 stars agreeing with him suggesting Geico ditch the ads without a similar number defending the ad would tend to indicate that the negative opinions outnumber the positive fairly significantly.

Advertising doesn't work. My kids sing the Burger King song every time it's on TV, but neither has ever been to Burger King.

That's probably a good thing; I think taking your kids to Burger King is grounds for a visit from CPS in some states.

Or a political commercial during the world series that my young children are watching that talks about abortion, rape, incest, prison sex changes for trans people, overdosing, fentanyl, and the occasional erectile dysfunction.

All of these things are easy to explain when the 8 year olds asks what they are.

Especially when it convinces you to ditch an ad agency that can't come up with an original idea and instead recycles a two decade old ad campaign.

I'd say the fact that Geico is teetering on having the 2nd largest market share would tend to indicate you are still wrong.

What does the company's market share as of 2023 have to do with how people view an ad campaign running on TV in 2024? I never said they were going to go out of business for running it, I said the ad campaign wasn't effective if it was generating negative opinions about the company. That may never actually end up making a meaningful dent in their market share, but if it isn't making a meaningful improvement in their market share either, then why are they spending millions of dollars running the ads in the first place?

Not sure what you are trying to say.

It was I who said it.

You are twisting the issue. Talking always means something but many times it is useless and irrelevant. I had hoped you would catch that.

An ad which repulses people will get people talking, but is likely to generate a negative purchasing reaction. People just go to their competitor which is not the intention.

An ad which attracts people would also get people talking but is likely to get people in their store and maybe buy their product. That is what companies want.

For example, this chick did good for ATT. They kept her on for a long time, maybe even now. People came in just because of her ample tits.

This guy sure got people talking but would have done bad for the company Subway but they were smart and cut him loose after he was caught diddling little children.

Question for 62strat: Would you have kept Jared Fogle if you were CEO/CMO of Subway?

You forgot the one about sex changes for children in the military. That one is laughably absurd.
