And, being an aisle rider, manage your fluid intake/outtake prior to buckling up if you're middle or window.

Aww, poor thing. It must be so terrible sitting in an aisle seat. I don't know how you manage!!

  • For anyone who flies a lot international, most airlines make you open them for departure and arrival, I don't get it, why? [/*

  • Safety regulations... might be an EASA thing that Euro carriers fall under. The idea is to have visibility outside in case of an emergency to better inform if there's fire or other hazards, which exits to open or not open, etc. Also provides better lighting inside in case the emergency lights fail in a crash situation.

If I pay for a window seat, that shade is staying up. Sorry. I get claustrophobic and I want to look out.

Learn how to properly stow your luggage in the overhead compartment. It varies by make and model but people (who are dumb) love to gently place 2 carry-ons flat down, head to toe style and then complain there's no more room when you could easily fit 2 or more bags up there, assuming it's a mainline sized plane.

This rule is more difficult on a CRJ plane or the smaller ERJs. Your fellow travelers would like to think there are no rules but they are wrong and cannot be trusted. Do not make eye contact but protect your (and your luggage's) ground.
I'm the guy people love to hate when I fly with one of my trombones. A trombone case usually takes up 1/2 to 2/3 of an overhead bin with a little space in front of it for purses or backpacks. People see me waiting to board and they are already giving me daggers from the eyes.
If your trombone is that big, I'm guessing it exceeds the standard 22" most airlines list as the max length for carry-ons. (Southwest is more generous with 24").

Therefore, it should be checked baggage. If you're that worried about damage, invest in a better travel case.

So, an additional rule: don't bring carry-ons that exceed the listed dimensions for carry-on bags.
Do you want me to give you a copy of the FAA rules ((914 CFR Part 251 docket No. DOT-OST-2014-12361] RIN 2105-AE37)?

Musical instruments are a standard exception to carry-on size restrictions primarily due to their value.

I…actually did not know this. Huh. Learned something today.

Airlines do technically have the option to force musicians to check their instruments, but then they remember that United breaks guitars.

    11. Do not board a plane if you are sick and you may still be contagious. Wear a mask if you have a cough.

Back before Covid I boarded a plane for flight from Shanghai back to the U.S. A couple with two teenage kids boards and sits one row up and across the aisle. The husband has a kitchen size garbage bag in his hand as he boards and he looks like he's sweating and flushed. I'm on the aisle seat so unfortunately I have a pretty good view of him. Over the next 5-10 minutes he starts looking much worse and he starts to sweat even more. And then the fireworks begin.

For the next 5-6 minutes he starts loudly heaving into the garbage bag. The flight attendants start coming by to check on him. They ask him if they want to wait to catch the next flight.... of course he says no. Once he's finished spewing, he ties the top of the bag and hands the bag to a flight attendant. She looked like she wanted to kill the guy. And I forgot to mention that the doors were already closed, so they had to leave the bag on the plane for the whole flight.

The pilots came back and tried to talk the family into waiting until a later flight to give the guy time to get better. They said 'no' of course. Luckily he didn't spew any more the rest of the flight, but that trip was pretty much my international trip nightmare.

Don't put your small personal items in the overhead and force other people to check their carry on luggage when the overheads run out of room.

Up to a point. If I am carrying a backpack as my only carryon, it is going in the overhead bin. Normally if I am carrying a carryon bag and the backpack as my personal item, then I would stick the backpack under the seat in front of me. But if the backpack is my only item, it is my carryon, not my personal item.

I am superunknown and I approve this message.

Why should I put my backpack (with my work laptop and all kinds of fairly complicated electronic equipment) under the seat in front of me where I need to jam my feet if I can lay it on top of someone else's trap in the overhead or lay it on its side where it doesn't take much room?

If it's my only item, it's going in the overhead.

If you only have one item I agree you should be able to put it overhead. But they could easily enforce only allowing one item per person overhead. It's out of control.

The reason it is out of control is that they are charging people for checked bags, causing people to have to stuff everything they own into a carryon and a "personal item and try to wedge it into the main cabin. If they gave everybody one free checked bag and then charged for the 2nd and beyond, the overhead bin situation would disappear. For every person who says "I won't ever trust them to get my checked bag there undamaged", there is at least one person who hates dragging all their bags through the airport with them and would gladly part with one as a checked bag if it didn't cost them $50+ per RT.

Isn't that what Phil Collins was singing about?

I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord
And I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord
Can you feel it coming in the air tonight? Oh Lord, oh Lord

If everyone followed simple etiquette and treated each othwr with respect then we wouldn't have this conversation at all. I do what's best for me because everyone does what's best for themselves rather than what's best for the entire plane.

Don't start none, won't be none.
