Fear about jury duty

I have very little knowledge of the judicial system, and I've always had this recurring fear about being selected for a jury for a criminal case that involves a cartel, crime boss, mafia or whatever. Maybe I've watched too many movies and TV shows and this isn't a real thing, but are defendants capable of learning the identities of individual jurors? Has there ever been a history of jurors being threatened or blackmailed to influence a case?

You should check out famous non-fiction legal writer John Grisham. His essays, papers and expository works have been turned into some pretty decent documentaries.

Over the years I have been called up for jury duty numerous times but only selected two times to serve on a panel of jurors. Served on a grand jury twice also… that was very enlightening.
Never gave it a thought. I was taught by my dad that serving was part of my civic duty.

Don't show up. They don't send the summons certified mail or even delivery confirmation so there's no proof you got it.

Like most, I've always looked for ways to get out of jury duty. Then I considered the intelligence of the average juror and the possibility that, through no fault of my own, I might one day face a jury trial. Now I show up prepared to do my civic duty.

I wonder if things have changed or it's the county you live in. The whole system needs to be revamped regardless. It's a giant waste of time for everyone who isn't selected. That process could easily be done remotely on demand.

I am sure it's happened, but incredibly rare. If past cases are any indication, the preferred method for Jury tampering is Bribery not threats of violence.

If it's a high profile case you might get attention via social media. But that seems to happen more often when Jurors decide to do public interviews. Think high profile murder cases, politicians, celebrities, etc.

I imagine jurors from Casey Anthony's case, Trump's cases, etc. would face some backlash regardless.

Williamson County here

Agreed. I had already communicated with my work and got everything squared away and the night before I was going to report in, they sent me an automated text message saying it's been canceled

The judge, the court staff, and the attorneys will always know your names. In low publicity cases they will often address the jurors by name.

In higher publicity cases the court will order the names sealed from the public but that does not stop the defense attorneys from knowing who you are. In some cases the jury questionnaires get pretty personal.

You have watched too many movies. Is it possible? Yes. Is the likelihood significantly closer to 0% than to 1%? Also yes. Put on your big boy pants and go do your civic duty.

Those type cases might account for 1 in 10,000 case that go to trial. Then it would then have to involve a sophisticated enough crime organization that they would have the capabilities to try an intimidate jurors. Maybe another 1 in a huge number.

It's X10,000 more likely you'll seat for Jim Bob's third DUI or some creep kitty porn type guy.

Idiotic response.

First of all, the system only works if we have quality people show up to do their civic duty.

Second, doing as you suggest could have you "show caused" by the Judge wherein you would have to appear and explain why you didn't show up. To continue with your clever ploy, after being put under oath, you would have to lie about not receiving the card. Congratulations, you've just purjured yourself and committed a felony.

Sure, you're likely to get away with it, but is it really worth it? To get out of doing something you ought to be proud to do in the first place?
The problem with people that don't get it is they don't get that they don't get it.

I had jury duty on Tuesday. Civil court. I made it to voir dire. the case was about adverse possession of land. ie. squatters rights. Individual vs a church. I was juror 17 so I had a somewhat decent likelihood of getting picked but I knew by the introduction of the case by the judge that I probably had an easy out.

The plaintiff attorney asked his questions but in such a way that my issue didn't come into play. I was getting really interested in the case so when the defendant's lawyer asked his questions i had to make a split second decision. speak up and almost certainly be struck or keep quiet and have a decent chance of getting seated on the jury. I decided to speak up and told my story. the final juror picked was #15.

I got paid $30 for doing my civic duty, didn't have to take a day as my company provides 1 day jury duty PTO and managed to get a quick 9 holes of golf in the afternoon!

All in all not bad. I do wish I knew the outcome of the case though!

Shoefly!

Jury Duty is dumb. Abrogate it. WTF are those highly paid judges for? They pay me peanuts to waste an entire day sitting around.

I think they should hire retired people who have time and would love to do this kind of thing. Pick people from ages 60-80. They could use the extra cash, better than doing greeter work at Walmart.

Literally, a "july of your peers" would result in a riot during some deliberations.

But that doesn't mean the jury selected in your trial will be any different whether you served or not. It's a crapshoot.

I had a judge during voir dire use, or try to use, "civic duty" as a reason I should be wanting to serve. I told him he probably shouldn't go there inasmuch as I had done more civic things than he and the four attorneys who had approached the bench combined. That I had never seen any of them, not a single time, involved in any civic organizations, doing any volunteerism, etc.
