Jeff Alm 's frantic message: "I have a buddy down'

After trying to understand Jeff Alm 's frantic directions, a 911 dispatcher listened helplessly as the Houston Oiler laid his cellular phone down on his wrecked car and fired four shotgun blasts, including one that killed him.
Listening to tape of the 911 call, made early Dec. 14 after Alm 's car crashed into a guardrail on the southbound ramp of the West Loop onto U.S. 59, only confirmed investigators' beliefs that Alm committed suicide, said Houston police homicide Sgt. Johnny Moore.
The wreck killed the Oilers defensive tackle's childhood friend Sean Lynch. Both men were 25. Lynch was thrown from the car, over the railing and onto the concrete below the ramp.
At the beginning of the minute-and-a -half-long call, Alm yells "Sean, are you all right?" At the end are four blasts from a shotgun.
Moore said Wednesday his investigation is complete, except for the results of toxicology tests conducted in Alm 's autopsy. Those results will not be available until after the first of the year, and Moore indicated doubt that they would change his conclusions about the incident.
Listening to the tape, Moore said, "You can tell (Alm 's) a little confused about where he is ... he was excited."
At one point Alm says, "I have a buddy down ... " followed by something unintelligible, but Moore said there was nothing in the call to indicate Alm was intoxicated.
Lynch's blood alcohol content measured slightly higher than .30 when he died. The legal blood alcohol limit for driving is .10. Lynch was not driving the car when it crashed.
Moore said nothing unusual was found in Alm 's Cadillac, nor anything to indicate the two had been drinking in the car. He said police have not determined where the two were before the wreck, "and we really have no interest in finding out ... we have no unanswered questions" about the case.
The tape contains frantic exchanges between Alm and an emergency dispatcher, followed by about 20 seconds of silence and a shotgun blast. Two more shotgun blasts are heard after brief intervals, each sounding farther away, he said. Finally, the sound of the fourth blast is heard.
The first officer to reach the scene found Alm sitting with his back to the guardrail, dead from a shotgun wound to the head. Lynch's body lay below the ramp. .....
