Stiffing the server over something they have no control over is dumb.

I'm calling bs on this unless I see the full receipt. Was there a coupon or some other discount?

Once it happens a few times they will complain to their boss.

This is what I'm thinking as well. Very convenient that the pic was cropped to not show the whole receipt.

More annoying than this is the restaurants that add a nominal percentage (4%) to cover health insurance for their employees.

Why is it my responsibility? Pay your employees.

Whether they include the 4% to the cost of each item or the cost of the total meal, it's all the same.

You're going to pay it either way so not sure why you're mad about it.

Yep. He deleted the tweet. I think there was a discount on it.

Build all operating costs into the price of the meal, like it's done in most other civilized countries. Including all wages for workers.

I remember reading message boards and even online articles around 15 years ago about how if you have a problem with tipping, then you just shouldn't be eating out. well lets just say i havent had a problem with tipping these last 15 years.

I agree.

But for this specific instance, maybe the restaurant decided they didn't want to re-print all the menus with the new prices. It's easier to update the RPOS system to add the 4% surcharge to the total cost of the meal.

When I got my boys haircut on Saturday it was $18 for the 12 year old and $16 for the 5 year old. The tip options were $5 $8 $10 and other.

We went out to Saltgrass for my FIL's birthday. He wanted to go there because he had a $50 voucher from his Landry's customer card. The bill was like $60 after the $50 off. So tip should have been $110 and I tipped $22. My CC company sent me an email asking if I meant to tip over 30%.

I went grocery shopping at HEB yesterday and they hooked me up. I just had to give them a little cash.

The difference is they're charging you for something you didn't agree to when you placed the order. Now if there's a sign when you walk in or something stating all orders are subject to a 4% surcharge, that's different, but to just get your check at the end of the meal and find extra charges is bull*****

I used to feel this way until I started making regular trips to countries where tipping isn't a thing. The food prices are higher for obvious reasons, but the service in general is below what you expect to receive in the US. I like the fact that I decide how much my server gets paid and can adjust up or down based on job performance. Where there is no tipping, that 20% is built into the price and you pay the same amount whether the service is good or not.

I wish I could remember what the surcharge that was added was for when we were in Crescent City, CA a couple of months ago. It added about 5% to our bill but I really didn't understand what it was for and there was no prior explanation on the menu about it (I went back and checked) We ate at several restaurants that weekend, but only one in that town added the extra fee.

Just add it to the menu price and be done with it, if I agree to pay $20 for a plate of food I don't want to be charged $23 after I have already consumed it and then also pay the tip depending on the level of service on top of that.

Kolache Rolf's switched to handheld devices rather than paper receipts. I started noticing the employees select the highest tip amount before handing it to you- meaning if you just sign, it gave them that 22 or 25% tip. It doesn't auto select it. I have literally seen them push it in the screen then hand it to me.

Because it's total bull***** They don't have an employer-sponsored health plan. Their claim is they're giving their employees extra money (which I already doubt) so that they can go pay for marketplace insurance…which is expensive and usually sucks.

Just pay your employees.
histag10
How long do you want to ignore this user?
We have marketplace insurance. Can confirm its expensive (like REALLY expensive), but ours doesn't suck.

Most people working in the restaurant industry who rely on tips will likely qualify for large subsidies for marketplace insurance.

I had it for a year when I was self-employed and it was expensive and didn't seem to offer great coverage. It definitely didn't seem to be on par with group coverage. I think it was BCBSTX.

Not my experience - service is as good in most places as it is in the U.S.

There were some new plans this year. We went with United Healthcare. $500 individual deductibles, 1500 family deductible, $7500 family OOP max. Full coverage, including dental for the kids with no max benefit foe the year. It's not a PPO, so we do have to declare a PCP, and it does require referrals- but we haven't had any issues with it so far (other than BSW not taking it, but CHI does)

Simply not true. I'm out of the country 8 days a month, primarily Europe and not only is there no tipping but the service is excellent. Guess wait staff still has pride in their work.
