What's your opinion on autographs? One of my friends said he thinks they're pointless.

They're pointless.

What are you going to do with it?

I would prefer a photo with the person.

At this point, a selfie with the person is the new autograph.

Depends on the item. If I had a guitar signed by Jimi Hendrix, I could sell it and by several nicer guitars and maybe a few amps.

I stopped chasing autographs at age 16 when my favorite baseball player was arrested with drugs.

I started collecting ticket stubs and experiences instead. I rarely talk about players individually but instead talk about the team or section of the team.

I have seen some great players play live and been in the same room as a lot of them at a young age and realized they are humans like me I didn't see the point in collecting autographs after I talked with alot of them. I still have a pretty decent collection but don't do it actively anymore.

One player I do have but never asked for it, is Buck O'Neil. My first job out of college was with a minor league baseball team and they hosted a Negro League Night. At the end of the night I was told by my general manager to drive Mr. O'Neil and his daughter to his hotel in my car. It was cold and I started my car and pulled it around to the front of the stadium.

I turned the car off and helped get the stuff he and his daughter brought loaded. We all got in and I tried starting the car. It didn't start. I tried it again and same thing. I turned to mr O'Neil and said I will go get my general managers car and I would be right back.

Mr O'Neil then looked my in the eye and said these words which I will never forget. " Son, in all of my years in baseball I have learned it is three strikes and then you are out. Try it again."

I turned the key and heard the engine come to life and we were on the road. Got to the hotel and he slid me a signed baseball when we parted our ways.

I took that lesson to never give up, keep trying and stay calm and collected.

They're pointless. I have enough credibility amongst my circle that they'd believe me if I met someone famous.

I collect and have a few dozen. I get why some people think they are pointless. But I think they are pretty awesome.

Hell I have a separate insurance rider for them

I have several of my higher dollar autographed baseballs covered, starting to get the itch to shop some of them at the next collector show.

Depends on what is signed imo. I have a couple books signed. Bush, Arsenal Wenger, Fred Haise.

Also have a framed picture of the Apollo 11 crew signed by all 3.

That's all I got

Currently rocking a Dallas Cowboys baseball cap autographed by Troy Aikman. Jimmy Vaughan autographed a VIP pass ages ago at a concert where Red Hot Chili Peppers opened for Fabulous Thunderbirds (not long after Stevie Ray died). Joey Ramone autographed an old business card a little before that.

That Apollo 11 is something else.

I got the entire casts of Friends and Seinfeld on separate pics. Those two plus Taylor Swift on her first CD and Yogi and Mickey are my faves.

I have no need for celebrity autographs, photos, selfies or any other lame memorabilia.

My brother in law spends thousands on autographed sports memorabilia. And they are middle class. Seems extremely childish and dumb. But to each their own I guess.

I have three I got when I was much younger - John Glenn, Bob Dole (when he ran against Clinton), and John Williams. I reached a point in my life when I realized they don't really matter because the memory they are connected to is good enough for me.

I haven't pursued autographs in years but I do have a number of them. I don't have anything quite as cool as an Apollo crew but below are a few I do have. All obtained in person.

Slocum on an A&M helmet(bought helmet from the athletic department at used equipment sale @ G Rollie)
Tom Osborne on Nebraska Helmet
Troy Aikman
Arnold Palmer
Leroy Neiman on 1984 Dallas Grand Prix poster...he was signing at Neiman Marcus
Tom Grieve
Dale Earnhardt

I have quite the autograph (95% music artists) collection. Hundreds, all collected in person.. and worth serious quid. Selfies have near zero value... for the "artist" never "touched" anything. I have pics taken of my wife, and a couple of my kids, with A-listers... had the photos printed... then at the next visit with the artist had them autograph the pic.

History, and my kids love them.

I use a sharpie to fake whatever autographs I want. I have a basketball "signed" by Jordan, white glove by "Michael Jackson", and napkin signed by Elvis. I've never sold any, of course. People start to realize what I'm doing when I show them my Lincoln baseball cap and Jesus bible.

I have a NASA envelope full of info from the 70s they sent me for a school report I did on them. I wrote NASA and they sent me a fair amount of stuff. Nothing signed but kinda cool to read it today.

I have a Johnny Bench autographed baseball he signed in my presence. I have a picture taken of the two of us right after he signed that I have framed. It's special to me but the only autograph I have.

When I was 12 (11/4/1984) I got Tom Landry's autograph. I regret that I no longer have it. I threw all of my other autographs (virtually all baseball) away at some point in my 40s. Mom snapped this just before I got the autograph.
