Stumbled onto this while researching a book on AI regulation. This aired on 1/1/1971 in the closing minutes of the Tonight Show.

Cigarette companies used to set up booths at our ENT Academy meetings and give out free cigarettes to doctors. Unreal

In the 40s and 50s. Our main journal did a really extensive article on the marketing several years ago.

And we used to smoke candy cigarettes. Can you imagine the histrionics house fraus would go through today seeing their kids smoking candy cigarettes?

cigarettes are awesome. Letting white women vote has absolutely destroyed this country, no joke. We used to be a country, a proper country, but we had this voting bloc come in a decide people who they dont decide to murder in the womb must be protected from everything other than the ramifications of their dumb ass ideas.

False memories are funny. I "remember" seeing commercials with the Marlboro Man and Joe Camel back in the late 80s. Must be the billboards and magazine ads that I'm remembering.

There was a sign in the Astrodome the size of a planet for Marlboro throughout the 80s.

Probably. Billboards advertising tobacco products were legal until 1997.

Fun fact: In 1952-56, the filters in Kent cigarettes were made out of blue asbestos. Thus making Kent smokers several times more likely to get lung cancer than people who smoked unfiltered cigarettes.

I was flipping channels and came across the end of a game show ( think it was a very old Price is Right) when they announced that "Contestants not appearing on stage" will receive consolation prizes. One of the prizes was a carton of Camels...wow times have changed

Do you think there are any products that are heavily advertised today that will be banned or heavily restricted in 50 years?

Alcohol and medications are some that I think might see the same treatment. Us and New Zealand are the only countries in the world that allow medication ads.

Gambling services are high on the list that I would think are going to be that way. I'd probably even wager a little money on it.

Pockets are probably too deep to ever see a change but all the people who propped up the tobacco industry moved into processed food. Our kids see ads directed at them for things that are at least as bad as cigarettes. It's possible some of that gets regulated.

I'm as guilty as anyone of consuming it but probably only what... 25% of the items in the grocery store are actually "food" in any sort of nutritional sense?

The ads for medications are completely out of control. People see that and decide that's what they want even if it doesn't fit them or they don't even have the conditions/ailments. I can see where ads help with people that say ten years ago were told no real treatments available but advances have been made and new medications are available. You can't watch TV for more than 15 minutes without an ad for psoriasis medications. Instead of an ad by the pharmaceutical company, an ad by an organization, e.g., National Psoriasis Foundation, advising of new treatments and see your doctor. But, as we all know, that doesn't help promote an individual drug that makes big big bucks.

Smoking is slow suicide. I remember when smoking was glorified in movies, in TV ads and in magazines. I remember the "I'd walk a mile for a Camel." Good luck with that. The Tobacco Institute spokeswoman denied any connection between smoking and health risks. That was a BIG lie. I HATE with passion smoking...have watched three family members die from it. No amount of money would I take to take just one puff...not $1 million ...not 2 million... end of conversation. By the way, I quit cold turkey one night 51 years ago. Felt bad and was coughing my lungs out, so to speak. I smoked three packs of Winstons that very day. Should be illegal but that won't happen... politicians are addicted to the tax revenue and tobacco is glorified as an important agricultural crop. It's a known killer!

. . . Awesome? You cannot believe that. There is no valid counterpoint. Smokers drive up our health insurance costs. Have you ever watched a person take his or her last breath and die after years of suffering from emphysema or throat or lung cancer? I have!
