I've had a number of times that people on the GB have removed scratches or modified a picture for me in some way. I've been trying to do it for myself tonight.

I have a very old photo that I scanned today. I was able to use the GIMP "despeckle" filter to take most of the noise out of it. There's a wildly underage girl in a yellow shirt with a big scratch across it and another by her head.

I assume that GIMP would be able to remove these scratches, but could anyone tell me how to do it? Or if there's another free solution, that would be great. Thanks.

Clone tool is generally better than smudge tool for that, but how much difference there is between them depends on the resolution and changes in colors involved.

This was an interesting night. My Filipino friend has been working on that bottle of Absolut since breakfast. When he finishes it, he'll want everyone out of the room so he can sleep. But no one leaves, so he grabs a blanket and pillow, goes into the bathroom, locks the door, and falls asleep in the tub.

For a while it was fine. We rode the elevator from the 10th floor down to the lobby (Sandestin Beach Hilton has a NICE lobby) and used that bathroom.

A couple of hours later he wakes up and starts issuing nonsensical orders with a bad Russian accent. "Hunt for Red October" had just come out, and my friend loved it. The door is still locked, and he's yelling "Nyet!" every time we tell him to let us in. He's getting laughs from everyone, and it's still all good. Until water starts pouring out from under the bathroom door.

My friend later told us he'd decided to turn himself into a submarine. So in the tub, with the Hilton's pillow and comforter, he'd turned on the water with his feet and stopped up the drain. He flooded the tub, and that's when we saw the water, which got rid of the guests.

Pounding on the bathroom door finally got him to let us in, and the crisis was averted.

And this is us about a year and a half ago.

He actually DID turn into a submarine.

Takes about 30 seconds to remove the scratch with the Google magic editor on a pixel phone.
