Just be cautious not to post it anywhere. I've been told someone I work with is doing this but I'm not sure how to really find out with concrete proof.

If it isn't obvious then why do you need to find out? Apparently nobody is standing out as slacking.

I'm not going into details for a reason. There's more to the story.

Met a dude on a cruise who is doing exactly this….while cruising all over the world. He holds down three separate jobs, none of the companies know about the others, AND he does it all via cruise ship wifi. We were drinking at the pool bar and he had to go 'take a couple of calls' and came back like an hour later.

My new hero.
This all depends on the industry you work in. Back in 2021 my wife and I were on Vacation in Cancun and met a group of 3 couples traveling together just wanting to go on a trip, well one of the husbands either couldn't or didn't want to take the time off work as he works remotely. Would log in from the resort for work and meetings at times, by the 2nd day either his boss or someone from IT called and asked why his computer showed it was logging in from Mexico. Not sure if anything came of it but there are ways of the company knowing where you are logging in from, just a matter of how much they care. Not the same as OP's question but as others have said there are ways of finding out or getting caught "cheating" the company and to most of them it is a fireable offense.

As long as the work was getting done, why would they care? My wife and I went to Hawaii for two weeks once. I took the second week off completely, but the first week I just woke up early (which was easy especially the first few days due to jet lag). It was a five hour difference, so I'd work until Lunchtime Hawaii time, which was 5:00 here and then have all afternoon and evening to do stuff with the family. A few of my co-workers knew where I was but most had no idea.

That said, a VPN fixes the issue your Cancun friend had.

Poster on Page 1 said it well - "Even though a job may only take a few hours a day, part of what some employers look at regarding a job is that it entitles them to exclusivity over ur time during their "work day"".

Still, as long as the employee's performance is meeting expectations and the other company(ies) aren't direct competitors, you could argue that it isn't a problem and the whole 'exclusivity over your time' is yet another an outdated way of looking at things.

Totally agree that the company shouldn't have cared. Most probably don't, but as Ghost91 said some of it is some companies are still using archaic ways to do business. The companies that have a problem with it are the same ones that are forcing their employees back into the office setting even though everything has ran smoothly since sending everyone home to work remote 3 years ago and employees are happier working from home, just can't get past "we must be in the office" and not WFH. I agree that as long as the work is done it shouldn't matter.

If you disclose it, who cares? If 1st company has an issue with it, then they should match the 47% pay bump you'd get with B.

Guess what I'm getting at is try to keep both doors open, but don't be surprised if being honest results in the 1st door closing. That's better than whiffing on Company B and wondering "What If"

End of the day- jobs are there to provide $$ to do the things we actually like to do until we can afford to not have to work.

I've yet to see a cruise ship with decent wifi to handle all my work needs. Especially with video calls now the norm

Seems greatest challenge would be simultaneous work meetings. You'd have to figure out a good way to bow out of one whenever that happens.

This is literally the only thing I can't quite figure out. J1 only has like 1 10 min a week though, so may be ok

How would the W-4 for the new job work? Would I have to disclose Job1, or could I just estimate withholding and have them take out extra?

Tell Company B you aren't leaving Company A and Take the pay bump. Tell Company A you are taking a second job. Done deal. Everything is above the board. If A get's pissy because of it and throws a fit, you're still 47% ahead...

can't have two birds in one hand if one is in the bush because you're asking permission to go from the one in the hand.

Just withhold 0 on 2nd job
He'll be getting taxed at his marginal rate, but the company doesn't know, so he'd want to project his taxes and ask for extra to be withheld.

I do this because my wife never has enough withheld and I got tired of paying penalties.

My friend used to do 3 jobs at a time. Yes, 3 full time paychecks. He is in IT. He said he maintained one job very carefully and took the other two lightly. He did it for about 18 months and eventually got fired from 2 jobs so he has 1 right now.

18 months isn't a bad run. I doubt I'd do it longer than that, I've kind of put 12 months as the exp date.

As long as you go into it knowing there is a strong possibility you get fired from one of the jobs, and a decent probability you get fired from both, and you're OK with that, then go for it.
