So where I work now requires about 6 hours of work a week. The rest i spend waiting on emails. Current job is east coast, so roughly 7-4.

I like it, but dont make a ton and am bored most of the day.

Yesterday an opportunity sort of fell into my lap for an interview with a company where I would make a decent amt more. This company is PST, and as such would be 10-7p CST.

From a production standpoint I think it is doable, especially since I would have 3 hours exclusive to each every day.

My concerns are more about getting burned out, but this seems like a decent opportunity to make some extra $$ and pay off some poor financial decisions I made in the past.

FWIW, I would make 247% of what I make now if I did both

I know a guy who got fired for doing this. He didn't get caught because his production went down. He got caught because he got his wires crossed and sent a document to someone at Job A that was supposed to go to someone at Job B and somehow the pieces got put together.

I'm sure it's doable.. but be careful.

How would you handle your LinkedIn profile?

If I were you, I'd just take the 47% raise at company B

Just be cautious not to post it anywhere. I've been told someone I work with is doing this but I'm not sure how to really find out with concrete proof.

Careful with ur current job.

Even though a job may only take a few hours a day, part of what some employers look at regarding a job is that it entitles them to exclusivity over ur time during their "work day".

The common practice is that if you get caught doing this, and have not cleared it with ur current employer first, even if u are able to lock down both, and there is no conflict of interest, is to fire the employee.

I would totally do it, but advise getting a second computer and cell phone to completely separate any proprietary info (and prevent the confusion mentioned earlier and possibly sending a doc to the wrong company etc. )

Network/IT/programmer guy at my last job had worked at some place called Spectrum in a big office building in SW Houston or Sugarland area

He said there was a guy in that building that worked two jobs in that building on different floors. He was an engineer or pipe designer or something in that realm

He would split time between floors and was kind of like George Costanza when he was napping under the desk: "Is George here today?

Yeah, I've seen him around."

He said he pulled it off for a good while before getting caught and fired from both jobs.

The stories of the people working remotely for multiple companies and farming out the work to cheaper engineers in Asia or the pacific islands southeast of Asia are pretty genius.

Nonsense.

The university has a very open dual-employment policy as long as you disclose the other employment.

Are the companies competitors? If not, go for it. Two laptops. Two phones. Profit.

My job could be 75% work from home. I should look into this.

6 hours of work a week and a full salary?! You already hit the jackpot. I would absolutely try to take a second job. But it seems like youre actually freed up to follow some sort of silly passion/hobby that most people arent able to.

Not really, I still have to be at my computer just in case I get an email pretty much all day.

I can work from pretty much anywhere, but that wouldn't change, as both would be remote.

It would just eat another 3 hrs of time each day.

Yes, I know I'd have less time overall, but right now financial freedom is worth the lost time for dicking around

3 stories

1st - 2007 in Los Angeles, working for a Colorado based start-up, a Sales Rep I worked with got an opportunity to be a Sales Rep for a new Israeli tech startup. It didn't compete against what our company was doing, it was sort of complementary but... he got caught after about 4-6 weeks and got fired. I had a very strong suspicion that he was two-timing our company but didn't have 100% proof. Was not sad to see him go.

2nd - 2021, peak scamdemic, I was involved with interviewing and hiring a remote worker whose services we would mark-up and sell. Coincidentally, I was fishing around in our customer contact database researching something for a tech support case. Found the same guy entered twice with the same unique (to me) long Indian first name and long Indian surname. Then both contacts (for different companies) had the same mobile number. The hiring manager pursued it and claimed that the duplicate entry was a mistake and that this name was very common in his part of India. Dude wound up not getting hired for the second job anyway.

3rd - last week, we were hiring a guy to do remote work and he gets down to the disclosure of outside employment and straight up tells us that he setup his own contracting company and has a contract with another company to do the same work for them. Plans to work 80 hours per week but assures me there won't be any overlap or conflict. Just no way that is going to work out in a million years. Especially if the two companies get cyber-attacked at the same time.

So yeah, people do try this. Rarely does it work out - as far as I know.

Have worked w three different people in the last 6 mo, fired for doing this. Granted, they were working 2+ jobs at three diff companies, and I think one of them is a trafficked person from Nigeria using someone else's name.

You will get caught. It's impossible to hide forever, and usually in your onboarding, there will be something about non-compete or not working multiple jobs in the same industry.

Met a dude on a cruise who is doing exactly this….while cruising all over the world. He holds down three separate jobs, none of the companies know about the others, AND he does it all via cruise ship wifi. We were drinking at the pool bar and he had to go 'take a couple of calls' and came back like an hour later.

My new hero.
