2 Punch 1 Lunch is a term used to describe a work culture where employees do the bare minimum to get by, with no interest in going above and beyond. They literally just show up to work (punch in), have lunch, and then leave (punch out).

How many of you do that?

god I wish I had a job that mundane. Imagine how many books I could read a day!

The thing is, Bob, it's not that I'm lazy, it's that I just don't care.

Don't... don't care?

It's a problem of motivation, all right? Now if I work my ass off and Initech ships a few extra units, I don't see another dime; so where's the motivation? And here's something else, Bob: I have eight different bosses right now.

I beg your pardon?

Eight bosses.

Eight?

Eight, Bob. So that means that when I make a mistake, I have eight different people coming by to tell me about it. That's my only real motivation is not to be hassled; that, and the fear of losing my job. But you know, Bob, that will only make someone work just hard enough not to get fired.

"I would say in a given day I only get about 15 minutes of actual work done."

I used to be very dedicated, bought-in, all that jazz. But new head guy replaced the effective top management, new exec VP is inarticulate and has zero experience in our field, so no one respects him.

Since that all shook out, I became much more transactional in my approach. They get what they ask for from me and little more.

I'm more motivated to help the folks who report to me than I am to do anything for the company.

I'm paid for performance so the harder I work the more money I make. I have to make myself take time off so I don't become a workaholic

Quotes mean something, my man.

"I'd say in a given week I probably only do about fifteen minutes of real, actual, work."

Subtle, but it really changes the whole line for me. "I only get about 15" implies he'd like to do more, but he just can't and only gets 15 minutes.

"I probably only do about 15 minutes" implies that's simply all he does and that's ok.

Yeah. I went and watched it after I quoted it in the post.

To go back and edit would have pushed me past the 15 minute mark for work on TexAgs that week so I left it.

"Two punch, one lunch"

Doing the bare minimum?

So, in other words, doing exactly your job duties and nothing else? Doing your job? Not going above and beyond? Employers need to understand that loyalty and extra effort is a two way street and most of them showed ages ago that it's the bottom line and not the people that matter.

If it meant I could smack my worthless boss twice then go eat, I'd be all about it.
