You can leave whenever you want. Typically you should stay for dinner, cutting the cake, and to say congrats to the couple.

I was at a wedding recently and the bride/groom "left" for the pictures and for the grandparents to see. They went back in and some people left while others went back in for more of the dancing and festivities.

That's a good idea.

the implication, and with the OPs history, he is communicating that he wants to be there the least amount of time to not appear rude.

Correct

And provided that is the case, then just be a adult and don't go.

I am going to witness the wedding. The party afterwards does not equal the wedding - the party is a lesser thing.

Or be an adult and stay for the entire thing.

I am staying for the entire wedding. When receptions last 8-10 hours, it's not realistic for many to stay for all that.

I certainly can, and have done that. I am looking for what the modern protocol is since it is now obvious waiting for the bride and groom to leave is outdated.

Either way, OP is a boy trapped in an old man's body.
Jealousy doesn't suit you.
I assure you, there is zero jealousy

Wedding receptions are supposed to be fun. By leaving early you are telling the couple they were too cheap to make it worth staying and that it's their own fault people are leaving.

My son went to Whataburger after the reception last night. Said there wasn't much in the way of food at the reception.
