I think it is time once again to encourage the other system schools to get their own damn names. (Tarleton, you're cool).
The dgaf is high today.
The reason Tarleton keeps its name is because John Tarleton's estate, which bequeathed both land and money, stipulated that his name be retained in perpetuity by the school. His name is also retained on Tennessee juvenile facility in Knoxville for the same reasons.
It is somewhat in question as to whether "John Tarleton" actually existed: the person using his name did but gave varying states and dates for his birth. I hold that he might have been on the run from New England law enforcement because he went south, held low visibility jobs but saved his money and invested in western land, including Texas. He almost lost it all when his wife, filing for divorce in St Louis, was about to take his assets. But he rushed to St Louis and successfully contested her asset claims. He returned to Texas embittered by his experience with marriage and never courted again. He was supposed to have had a pet duck named Oscar P who followed him about but there is no independent evidence of that.
Having a degree from an institution named after a fictional character is strangely gratifying to me.
