Now there's going to be some section of people who will complain that Mattel is making fun of people with Down syndrome and this will go viral and some will angrily boycott Mattel and they will apologize and shut down the entire line.

Quote:

WASHINGTON (AP) Toy company Mattel revealed its first Barbie doll representing a person with Down syndrome on Tuesday.
Mattel collaborated with the National Down Syndrome Society to create the Barbie and "ensure the doll accurately represents a person with Down syndrome," the company said.
Design features of the new Barbie were made under guidance from NDSS, Mattel said. In addition to portraying some physical characteristics of a person with Down syndrome, the Barbie's clothing and accessories carry special meaning.

I think it's a great idea for those kids. Now where's the Barbie that actually looks like she has Down's Syndrome? Also, they missed out on mix matches socks

Oh, that would raise an outcry. "Do you mean to say that people with Downs cannot match their socks??".

Why would it raise an outcry? Mismatched socks are part of the Down Syndrome Awareness campaign

Are they obligated to? Mattel is a corp to make money.

Big thumbs up Matel

As a parent of a child with DS, really cool seeing our community getting more awareness, both across the country and on TexAgs.

Crazy stat. A child with DS born in the 70s had a life expectancy of 30. That life expectancy is now 60. Amazing growth and intervention at an early age.

My little man is only 1.5, but he's already doing stuff his typically developing older sister hadn't mastered at his age.

I didn't say they were, but it would certainly be a good gesture on their part and look less like "making a buck off of Downs Syndrome" if they did.

A human being with down syndrome is a much more real world human than one who looks like Barbie, so this is a positive step for Mattel.

If Barbie were an actual women, she would be 5'9" tall, have a 39" bust, an 18" waist, 33" hips and a size 3 shoe! Barbie calls this a "full figure" and likes her weight at 110 lbs. At 5'9" tall and weighing 110 lbs, Barbie would have a BMI of 16.24 and fit the weight criteria for anorexia.

I think it's great but the normal "representation matters" opposition crowd is strangely absent here.

People don't need logic these days to raise an outcry. Everything, everywhere every time is "offensive" to someone or other.

Agree with this but Barbie is a caricature, so this is not as big a deal as people often say.

I've been coaching Special Olympics Basketball for 15 years and my DS kids would just love love this concept. Why stop a Barbie? How about Ken? It sure substantiates their place in society as integral and contributing citizens.

I'm not gonna lie, this makes me tear up a bit. (Don't tell anybody!)

ShankAg, I highly recommend Another Season, a book by Coach Gene Stallings, now of Powderly, Texas just north of Paris. It's an accurate account of Johnny, who was born Down Syndrome in 1962; Johnny died in 2008 at age 46. The account is true love story. Johnny was special beyond measure...a blessing to all who ever met him; and he greatly influenced people of all walks. He was a living definition of goodness, and he had an incredible memory for remembering names. I recommend the book to anyone. Google Another Season by Gene Stallings.
