Did you have to make separate registries at lots of retailers and The Knot just lists them, or can you do all of that thru The Knot?

Register for the stuff you want to upgrade, including his tools. I included a bunch of cordless power tools as a joke and we got more of those than the random spoons and tiny dishes and other useless crap my wife picked.

have to go to the site for the most part, but amazon combines any that they are a partner with. Also has a button (or should) that says that we have registries at other sites like etsy.

we are thinking about renovating a fixer upper, so i'm thinking of registering for a shop vac.

You definitely should. Don't worry about just "traditional" stuff. People like to buy stuff you'll actually use so tools and everything else should be on the list.
