Be careful. The Amish from some states are a little feisty.

I have a handful of different pieces of Amish furniture. Does that count?

Beat me to it. Blue star. They do make some damn good furniture. We have a 25 year old rocker that is, no pun intended, rock solid to this day.

I use to pass them on country roads in Illinois. They never get over to the shoulder in their horse and buggies.

no joke, the older i get, the more I yearn for their way of life.

I need a sect where they do all things the normal amish way, but also believe in air conditioning.

Peter Santanello has a great YouTube channel and he got in with the Amish and shares his experiences. It's very interesting.

I'm not going crazy - that is Viggo Mortensen in a small role.

i am just as jealous of them as i am of elon musk, and any self sufficient community at this point.

Ive heard there were amish in texas around Boling (wharton county) around 20 years ago.

not having A/C for 8 months out of the year would be rough, but if everyone stinks you dont know the difference.

Yes, actually. Worked for a company that sold a lot of steel to Amish and Mennonite companies and communities. It was difficult to communicate with them as there was only one phone for many people - so calling didn't work and no email. Had to send faxes with notes and invoices. Handwritten checks in handwritten envelopes. Only men conducted business and they only wanted to deal with men on our end as well although they were polite about it. Generally very prompt in paying invoices and good customers in general although we did have one exception of this dude who was a snake. One time a family showed up to our office off a bus from Pennsylvania. No showers for days.

My parents live up in NE Missouri about 30 miles from an Amish community. They do fantastic work for prices that you'd never consider possible nowadays. If you'll transport them, they'll bring a crew to your home and do any sort of work you want. Build a pole barn? Do an add-on? Enclose a patio? Yup, they'll do it all and their workmanship is superior to just about any alternative.

My mom gets reimbursed 96 cents/mile to take them to places like Ohio, etc. In fact, my mom is taking them to S. Dakota this weekend. They'll pay for her meals, hotel as well as the reimbursement for mileage. It's been quite a good arrangement for my fixed income parents.

I type this on Amish furniture we had built by the same Amish community. My parents loaded it up on a trailer and brought it down to us in Houston. I think we paid $1,300 for two oak computer desks that each weight a few hundred pounds. They are great to deal with, needless to write.
